The WOW Christmas present for DS aged 6 to drive...

(Yes I know it's June, this is the Christmas board)

DS, currently 5, 6 at Christmas loves anything he can drive. He is also a very tall boy.

He and his twin sister currently sit in one of those ride on jeep looking things which they've have for over a year and frankly they are shoehorned in and he can drive it with his knees.

We don't quite have the room, nor do I feel he's quite ready for a dirt bike or quad bike though.

Is there a bigger version of what he's currently got that anyone knows of? The thing he's got purports to be suitable up to age 8. No chance he'll fit in it by this December as he turns 6.

(Pic attached, closest to memory as it's currently at nannies)

Thank you in advance...

Is anyone in the family keen/competent with DIY?
If so a Toylander might fit the bill.

Based on the design of the old Land Rovers, Jeeps and other similar vehicles (several different models available), they are available as a kit to build yourself but with it still only being June, there is plenty of time to get one built.😁

My late Ddad built one which we still have. With a (mostly) wooden body, metal mechanicals and electric motors for drive they are sturdy, long lasting (none of your plastic rubbish here) and great fun. As a bonus, they also hold there value so resale is not a problem.
Ddog also liked sitting in the back and being driven around.😆

I've seen these, I like them very much. Don't know anyone who has one, so thank you for commenting.

Will they fare ok on bumpy lawn? Need more rugged tyres/suspension?

Not sure if it's what you're looking for but last Christmas we bought our off the charts tall, zero balance or coordination just tuenedb6 year old a Berg go kart instead of a bike. It's been great! We went for the Berg Rally but they do other versions with gears and motors and stuff

Edited

He's had a go on these at a little set up at a farm shop and absolutely loved them. These were on concrete and hard tracks though. I can't see him having the strength to peddle it with any real gumption across the hilly grass. Where does your DS ride his?

If you want to see one green-laning!

ability off-road will depend a bit on batteries and motors - both of which can be upgraded - it is only two wheel drive and is a toy car at the end of the day - but surprisingly capable!

They are absolutely perfect for grass and (very) mild off-roading.
If you go for the twin motor setup it means both rear wheels are driving which means they are very nimble.
The wheels are metal with proper rubber tyres (& inner tubes) so they actually grip so no nasty plastic wheels.
They are quite heavy but extremely robust and will last a lifetime.
You can also plug in a remote control so if your little darling starts to get a bit excited and exploring a bit too far, you can kill the motors.
Limited to about 6mph, the batteries last for several hours before needing a recharge.
Some keen DIY'ers have even built matching trailers to tow and a couple of people, perfect scale caravans which they hitch up!

You need something like this with a flat top. They have them at a park near me, adults can sit on the flat bit to drive the younger kids. So they could both do it sitting on the flat bit if they're too big for the actual seat.

He would absolutely lose his mind if he had one of these with a trailer Grin

I've looked a few up on eBay at a myriad of price/spec/condition, is the remote to kill the engines fairly easy to add if the existing set up doesn't offer that?

Anything you can recommend to look out for or avoid?

I specifically went for the rally model for the "off roadability". He rides it at the park across the grass (loves going down the hills at speed, less keen on cycling back up!), the beach on compacted sand, various trails (gravel/bark paths) and gets a decent speed on all surfaces!

For reference, he's 6, over 4 and a half feet tall, 40kg and has plenty of room for growth on it

PeckyGoose · 24/06/2025 20:07

Just to add - whatever you get, don't add one of these. Instant regret 🤣

Because she likes being a passenger. God forbid.

I'm not sure you realise what I meant here. To clarify, won't DD also be driving? If not this sounds like an MN post from the 1950s.

Oh I got exactly what you meant.

So your sanctimonious bollocks got the reply it deserved.

No she won't be driving it. Because she doesn't like it. Can you cope with that Wink

No need to be rude. I have several likes/thanks on both my posts so I'll leave you to your sexist present seeking now (never met a young girl nowadays that doesn't want to be in the driving seat).

Sexist in your narrow imagination I'm afraid. Beyond your comprehension that every child might not want to do exactly the same thing?

Very correct, you haven't met my daughter.
