Christmas shopping trip suggestions for someone with mobility issues

Hi All,

I live in Northern Ireland and up until the last few years ever year me and my mum would go on a coach Christmas shopper trip. We had done both Manchester and a Birmingham.

My mum has disabilities that cause her chronic pain. She walks with the help of a walking stick or a roller. She can walk around with these supports and her own pace but she isn't fit to sit in a bus for a long time anymore without being in alot of pain.

I wanted to ask on the off chance anyone had any ideas of what we could do instead to fill this trip as it is something we've really come to enjoy. Any practical tips or places we could visit?

I really should post this on the NI board for specific suggestions but I fear I may be ousted for mentioning Christmas in may!

I really don't want my mum to miss out anymore than she already does so any suggestions of christmassy trips or even just days out are welcome.

What about a visit to Castle Ward? They have a Christmas Market on, a nice tea room, and they decorate the Manor House for Christmas beautifully so it's nice to have a look around Christmas Artisan Market at Castle Ward 2025 | National Trust. They're really good with accessibility and if you get in touch in advance they have things like mobility scooters available to borrow.

That is a wonderful suggestion! Thank you. And Castle Ward is far enough away from us that we can make a day out of it.

Could you do an overnighter or couple of nights somewhere?

Do you really shop for presents or is it just more a Christmassy Day Out?

So before we always would have stayed for a couple night. I say a shopping trip but really it was just a christmassy trip, dander around Christmas markets, nice food, buy a few bits. So really more of a Christmas outing.

So suggestions of a christmassy nature really I think is what I'm looking for ☺️. Be that a day trip or a night or 2 away.

How would your Mum be flying?

The German Christmas Markets are fab & I think the pathways were fairly user friendly.

Copenhagen was great too & very roll ator /walking stick friendly.

Unfortunately having been spoilt by those I haven't found anywhere in England that id recommend 🫩

Though I do enjoy going to London & All the usual places! Including singing Carols under the tree in Trafalgar Square.

I hope you find something(s) you can both enjoy!!

We would be willing to fly but would need to be under about 2 hours. My plan had been to maybe fly over to England from here rather than boat.

Copenhagen and Germany both sounds unreal. I will see what they would be like for her.

Thank-you! I really don't want her to miss out. She's only 60.
