Christmas is tough for some people

People ask me why I don't like Christmas.
Well, aside from the tacky decorations, horrid songs and
insipid movies, it's also a hard time for some people.
Christmas day especially.
It can be a reminder of how lonely we feel, of how Christmases have changed, of how loved ones have dwindled, of how we are perhaps not where we expected to be in life as another year whizzes to an end.
So, if we are not all having the Hallmark movie experience, then Christmas is just a cruel reminder of all of the above 😕

I agree with you op and understand. In a way, I'd rather just be on my own so I could ignore it..but I have DC so I have to go along with it all and try to make it special. We have family to see, we're not on our own, but lots of my older family members are now gone and I struggle with it. I also hate this time of year and have SAD so it's just an awful time all in all

I mean, this is judgemental of others, which is odd considering you’re explaining how much of a hard time you’re having with Christmas.

It can be a reminder of how lonely we feel, of how Christmases have changed, of how loved ones have dwindled, of how we are perhaps not where we expected to be in life as another year whizzes to an end.

it doesn’t have to be any of those things though. To me Christmas is a day off work where you have no guilt about being productive, or being out and about like other bank holidays. It’s totally acceptable to be at home all day. You can spend the day doing whatever brings you joy, you don’t have to dwell on everything you feel is wrong. You seem the type of person who is uncomfortable being left alone with your own thoughts. It’s a joy-sucking attitude.

If you felt lonely this Christmas then put some consideration in how you can feel less lonely next Christmas. This may mean reconnecting with friends/family, meeting new people this year, or even just spending the next Christmas volunteering eg crisis at Christmas or the Samaritans.

Or perhaps speak to someone about how you’re feeling about life and get support. Maybe write down the top 5 issues bothering you about where you are in life and see what practical things you can do in the next 12 months to feel more at ease.

I think it depends on what your life is ordinarily like. I'm a sahm and DH WFH, being at home all day is not a novelty or a treat for me.

That wasn’t my point. My point was it’s a day you can spend at home doing what you want as opposed to OP referencing “tacky decorations”, “horrid songs”, “insipid movies” and generally having a pity party.
