Christmas morning - what time do you let your children open their stocking?

When I was a child I was made to wait until at least 8am before I could get up on Christmas morning and open my stocking. I can remember it feeling like an excruciatingly long wait!
I'm still an early riser as an adult and so is dd, so in this house we say any time from 5:30am is fine. What does everyone else do?

Any time after 6

Shimmyshimmyshimmy · 24/12/2024 17:08

Allowed to open one present that will keep them entertained when they wake (no earlier than 6:30) and then we’ll do stocking about 7:45.

JM88Jen · 24/12/2024 17:10

We just let them crack on whenever they wake up. My eldest usually gets his siblings up at 5/6 ISH 🙈 he knows the deal but still gets so excited it's quite sweet. We tend to sit on our bed trying to wake up whilst they open them together on the landing outside our door. I have good memories of waking my little sister up and we would open ours on our bed when parents were asleep and going back to sleep a while longer before trying to get them up to go open the under tree gifts 🤣

verycloakanddaggers · 24/12/2024 17:14

One up, all up in this house.
Luckily no one ever went earlier than 5am.

Natsku · 24/12/2024 17:18

We celebrated today, I told ds he had to stay in his room until half 8 but I put his stocking and a present in there for him to open if he woke up before that but he didn't open them, he wasn't sure if he was allowed (my fault for not being clearer with him) so just put his music on and danced instead.
He's always been quite a patient child though so he doesn't find it difficult to wait.
DD I had to wake up at 9 Grin

Zouks · 24/12/2024 17:43

7am as that's the time they're normally allowed to get up.

ChimpyChops · 24/12/2024 17:44

They usually wake up at about 2am and open their stockings, then go back to sleep.
Tree presents at 8am 🎄

BlueyInsideVoice · 24/12/2024 17:59

9yo DD is a early riser. No matter what time she goes to bed she's up by 5am at the latest.

She can open her stocking as soon as she's up, but she has to play quietly in her room (i.e. watch Nativity on her iPad) until 7am. Then she can come and get me.

It's only me, DD and my dad. Once she's woken me, I make tea for me and my dad and then she'll leg towards her presents - then it's a free for all.
Wrapping paper flying everywhere!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/12/2024 18:15

Ours had to wait until we were awake, so around 7 am. Dds used to bring their stockings to,open on our bed. IIRC I’d usually have a cup of tea by then, and our dog and cat would join us all - just as well we had a nice big bed!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 24/12/2024 18:54

Whenever they wake but they very rarely wake before more. Usually about 7:30 - 8, even on Christmas Day.

We weren't allowed to open them before 7 when I was younger. It was excruciating! 🤣

mathanxiety · 24/12/2024 19:24

They're all adults now, but they were welcome to open their presents any time. I think I once asked that everyone wait until at least 5 am, and if they got up at the crack of silly o'clock to keep the noise down as I wouldn't be up til 7.

CoodleMoodle · 24/12/2024 19:31

7:30am. That's when our two always come in to us, every single day, not a minute earlier or later. They usually wake up before that but read or colour in their rooms before coming in, and it's no different at Christmas... I imagine one of them will sneak into the other's room before 7:30 though!

Violinist64 · 24/12/2024 19:33

My children are grown up, so no longer have stockings, but when they were children, 7 am was the rule, which gave us time to get a cup of tea to drink while they opened their stockings on our bed.

Chillilounger · 24/12/2024 21:10

Usually when they get up with as long as it's after 6.... This year (11/13) they can open them when they like but are giving us a lie in in exchange!

Sinkintotheswamp · 24/12/2024 21:11

Stockings whenever they wake up.

Actual presents under the tree around 11am.

DangerPigeon · 24/12/2024 21:17

They have a small present in a stocking that gets laid at the end of their bed and they can open when they wake, then we open all family presents downstairs together. They're teens now but will probably still wake and head down by 8.

Lovemusic82 · 24/12/2024 21:18

My dc are older now, we didn’t do stockings when they were really small but introduced them in order to get an extra hour in bed. Dd is autistic and wakes up at 5am every day,Christmas Day she wakes even earlier so we started letting her open her stocking in her room to get a slight lie in, I would put items in there to keep her busy (puzzles, fidget toys, book etc..). She’s now 18 but mentally a lot younger, I tell her she can open her stocking when the sun comes up and she can stay in her room until 7.30am, we then have breakfast at 8am and open tree presents after.

Mishmashs · 24/12/2024 21:20

always 7am in our house and mum and dad need a fresh coffee first in hand before the stocking is opened!

wsdr · 24/12/2024 21:20

Stockings are a means for parents to get extra sleep!

Can be opened at any time as long as they don't wake anyone up.

I remember the joy of trying to work out what was in my stocking when I shared a room with my siblings and couldn't turn the light on.

When we were kids it was whenever we woke up. But parents always got up everyday sometime between 4 and 5.30 and made a cup of tea to take back to bed. So I don't ever recall waking up before they were awake.

bluebee17 · 24/12/2024 21:21

No earlier than 7

EveryDayisFriday · 24/12/2024 21:22

When they were young, up at 6.30 was usual. They are now teens so we'll be lucky to see them by 11am
