Looked online and it says ham can be soaked in cold water overnight but to change water every two hours 😵‍💫

I do mine overnight. I put it on to soak a few hours before I plan to go to bed, change water before going up and then just take out in the morning.

Overnight, soak once and then switch for fresh water before going to bed, then change water again as soon as I'm up. Once more a few hours later and it's never too bad

Most hams don't need much desalting these days. I usually put it a pan, bring the water up to the boil, then throw the water away and rinse the ham. This generally cooks enough of the outside that you can take a very tiny thin slice and taste it - or you can fry a tiny bit. If it is till a bit too salty just do it again.

You don't really need to desalt now

You can do a quick job by putting it in water, bring to the boil then immediately chuck the water and continue your recipe as normal. But as pp say, you don’t always need it these days.

I've never had to desalt a supermarket ham, but our butcher's ham definitely needs desalting. As well as soaking and changing water frequently, my Mum then used to put it in a pan of cold water, bringing it to the boil, then discard that water and start again. I have no idea if this is how you are supposed to do it, I only know it always worked for her/me.

Thanks all- looks like switching water every 2 hours is excessive.

I fint think you needed to desalt a supermarket one either but I had a really salty one last year (Aldi) and the one I bought thus year (Tesco) has reviews saying it s really salty so will err on side of caution.

Put in a big pan of cold water with a peeled potato, that helps absorb the salt. Just change the water one or two times if you can be bothered. If not it will still work.
