Have just added up how much I’ve spent on DC stocking…

And am utterly shocked it’s come to £90!!!!

Am trying to rationalize that actually a lot of the items are things I’d have to buy for them at other times anyway (stationery for school, hand cream, lip salve etc) and I can afford it, but it just surprised me when I added it up.

Has anyone else had a similar shock? Or are you sensible enough to not add it up

Such a range, and in general has made me feel better. Spat my tea out at the phrase ‘stunt stocking’, such a genius idea!

I think the key thing for me on reflection is there’s nothing in the stocking that won’t be used (no five-minute wonder toys or tat that will break) and when I take out the bits I’d have to buy anyway (stationery for school, consumables for their sport, socks etc) I’m left with a far less eye watering bill.

Think I might try to keep better tabs on all the just adding one more things next year just because of how long it’s taken to wrap it all!

Stockings are def a big thing for us - our tradition is to open together upstairs once all awake.

I spent about £100 and had a panic it wasn’t enough today!

ChristmasIsComing2024 · 23/12/2024 17:31

I’ve spent £27 on my 3 year olds stocking and £31 on my partners stocking 🙈 I love finding all the little stocking presents though 😄

BackoffSusan · 23/12/2024 21:02

I've spent about £90 on my 4 year olds stocking. I had a big stocking as a kid and I use the same one for my son. I absolutely loved it as a kid and my mum really loved doing it. Even though she didn't earn very much, she saved all year for Christmas and it was magical!
I also really loved the 'tat' toys as a kid as well as the more practical stuff.

For my son's stocking he has.....

  • Pack of hot wheels cars
  • Monster truck
  • Skillmatics Found it Game
  • Squidgy Centipede
  • I spy creepy crawlies book
  • Foam bow and arrow set
  • Chocolate Santa
  • Bath bombs
  • Squirty bath soap
  • Minions shower gel
  • Yoto card
  • Hot chocolate bomb
  • Magic snow
  • Mini voice changing megaphone
  • Pirate tattoos
  • Case for yoto mini
  • Paint sticks
  • Stickers
  • Whoopee cushion
  • Slinky
Muteswan · 23/12/2024 21:23

Just added up: £44 for the baby's stocking and £55.50 for my 4yo's. For that, they have:

DD4

Cuddly toy cat wearing a dress
Pink pocket torch
Yoto card
Glittery gel pens
Postman Pat DVD
Wooden minibeast bracelet making kit
Penguin fluffy bedsocks

DD 12 weeks

Snowman plush
360 cup
Weaning spoons
Silicone baby feeder thing
Very Hungry Caterpillar buggy book
Little watering can bath toy

Stockings in our house are what Father Christmas brings, along with one present that they've asked for.

Mine are about £20-25 each for DC age 10 and 12. They both get a book, a mug, a chocolate orange, chocolate coins and pants! DD is getting a small candle and a book light, and DS some putty and a squishy frog thing - that's it.

RareMaker · 23/12/2024 21:36

Probably about 50 per child. Which is shocking as in my head "it's about 10"

Alwaystired23 · 23/12/2024 21:59

I think I've probably spent about £90-100, as well on stockings for my sons. They have useful stuff in their stockings, such as a flint and steel for scouts £10, head torch £10, one has a new glasses case, £10, one has a phone case £10. It all adds up, but it is stuff they need.

L'Oréal Deodrant

Bippityboppitybooo · 23/12/2024 23:00

About £25 each for ds6 and dd3 - but both include an £8 hot wheels mario kart car. Then there's a giant chocolate coin, regular chocolate coins bag, candy canes, small plush (candy cane and plants vs zombies), hair clips, minecraft foam pickaxes, mini nerf target, mini loom band kit, mini fake lego kit, rubber duck (mickey and minnie), and robot fish that swim in the bath. They mostly match other than the hair clips and nerf target.

I am a dedicated bargain hunter after 6 years on the threads here - and we got a b&m this year too which helps!

My stocking rules are low cost and treats only. I hated getting practical stuff like makeup remover pads. Did appreciate nicer useful things though like socks. Santa fills stockings and 1 under tree gift, the rest is from us and the family/friends who bought it. We have normal sized stockings that are opened in bed when ds wakes us all. I love finding fun things for stockings!

Yup - this was me too but it does include a board game (£15), AirUp pods (£15), PJs (£10), perfume, bath bombs and lip balm, swimming goggles, jewellery and stationery as well as a few choccies.

And some 49p blu tac. DD loves blu tac!

okydokethen · 23/12/2024 16:05

I do a big stocking and 2 or 3 presents under the tree that kids choose.

My stocking cost a lot more than OPs but I guess it's up to you how much you spend. I like to think there's nothing that won't be used, eaten or enjoyed and therefore it doesn't feel too wasteful but I over spend to over compensate I know.

Oh good - I’m glad I’m not the only one doing this!

Shimmyshimmyshimmy · 23/12/2024 23:26

to clarify I don’t mean not enough in terms of spend but in terms of what I’ve bought. She has a massive sack from when toys were big but now presents are tiny little things!

It’s a lot. But it sounds great

Stockings are a big thing in our house. If you wake up here on Christmas morning you have a stocking whoever you are.
I've done them for DM every year and I've had a few nieces and nephews stay over and they've always had one. We have two kittens this year and they have one each.
DC stockings are huge, and it's gotten more difficult to fill them every year but we couldn't be without them.
DD asked for a big ticket item this year and claimed it was they only thing she wanted so long as she still had her stocking.
They only thing that always has to be in them is a chocolate orange and top trumps, and 16 years on the top trumps gets harder and harder .
I've never added up how much it costs but there is only every one tat present in it. This year it's flying finger chickens but they are for the cats really 😁
I even have a mini stocking with chocolate coins, smarties tubes, marshmallow lollies and haribos that goes in the big stocking.

Viviennemary · 24/12/2024 00:03

That is a crazy amount

Epanoto · 24/12/2024 00:15

When the kids were little, stockings were for small things and opened on their beds first thing on Christmas Day. We'd then go downstairs and see what presents were under the tree.

Now my kids are older teens, the stockings are only going to have food gifts this year - latte sachets, chocolate, sweets along with toothbrush, deodorant etc

BlueyInsideVoice · 24/12/2024 00:36

I'm at around the same price for 9yo DD's stocking.

I have gone nuts this year, spending an absolute fortune - but we've had a rubbish year and she's been super strong.

She has PJs, a new outfit, Converse, some skin care, lip oils and then a few little extra bits and pieces. It all adds up!

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 24/12/2024 00:38

That's pretty much how much I've spent on mine in total!

EcoCustard · 24/12/2024 00:39

Never added my stockings up however, probably not far off that.

Ds5’s stocking this year has:
LEGO city polybag
Top Trumps Spiders
Dinosaur stickers
Toy Tarantula
Dinosaur Fidget/squishy toy
Novelty pens
pencil sharpner
crocodile ruler
tube of smarties
Hot wheels car
Chocolate scented pencils
Dinosaur wallet
a few small sweets
i-spy book ( I get bits throughout Autumn so it’s spread out. Other Dc get similar but to suit ages.

ChiaraRimini · 24/12/2024 03:59

Over £100 spent on stocking presents for 3 DC (2 adults and one teen). £30 of that is on USB adapter plugs (to stop them nicking mine).
I think if people added up how much they actually spent rather than "guesstimating" they'd realise the stocking presents cost a lot more than they realise.

AmberAlert86 · 24/12/2024 04:35

I've never done a Christmas stocking. Why do you do it? Is it for kids only? If you do stocking, how many gifts do you also have under a tree?

Winterscoming77 · 24/12/2024 04:44

My eldest (19) does all of our stockings now including mine and DH which is really lovely after the long years of doing thm for them. Now we have the joy of stockings at 40+. I imagine the dog will get one this year too. Love stockings but don’t wrap the things inside and set a budget for £50pp but I believe the budget was a bit blown this year.

MaraMar · 24/12/2024 05:24

With the prices of things these days, I can absolutely see how it could add up to £90. My two eldest children have asked for ridiculously overpriced clothing and shoes this Christmas, so stockings have had to be cheaper. Chocolate, socks, a beanie, underwear, gloves. I think I spent £25 each.
