UK doctors warn of risk from expanding water beads marketed as toys

Just in case any of you have bought these beads as part of your Christmas preps/gifting , or in case your children receive them as gifts, I tthought I would draw your attention to the need for caution.
I'm sure they are fine if the risks are fully taken into account and young children are supervised but the warning seemed like something everyone would need to know about if these are in their house.

It's worrying that they can increase in size 400 times and not show up on x-rays!

Agree The bbc are also flagging this up. I saw a doctor interviewed recently suggesting that all parents should also check whether they are banned from your nurseries. They are horrific www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwy3llg78ygo

Have never heard of these before, thanks for educating those of us who weren't aware with the above link.

Actually I want to withdraw the bit of my post where I say "I'm sure they are fine if the risks are fully taken into account and young children are supervised"!

They don't really seem like something that should be marketed at all.

(I think I was just instinctively protecting myself against the fierceness on MN these days -- I assumed someone would angrily tell me I was a health-and-safety grinch or that I was gift-shaming or somethingGrin)

I work with children and we haven't risk assessed for any of these things, thinking it's something I need to raise in the new year. So, water beads, small magnets, small button batteries in toys and possibly marshmallows. Any other items that fall into that category of being seemingly harmless but high risk if ingested?

There was a thread on this a few months ago started by a doctor who had seen a child in hospital who had injected them.

That's really bad if your local early years team haven't been in touch to tell you about this. Ours have
