How much has Christmas cost?

And do you think it's worth it/good value for money?

My list

Presents £600 inc family and children
Food shop £150
Out for Christmas Day lunch £300

I don't think it's too bad and good value for money. My adult ish children will be very pleased with their gifts and I'm happy with the cost of food. First ever Christmas Day eating out so I won't know yet if we'll enjoy it or not - I certainly hope so because I'm loving not having to prep a Christmas dinner!

About £1000. Which is crackers really, excusing the pun.

Oh yeah, forgot things like buying crackers 🤣 and gift wrap, gift bags, tree decorations.....god it's endless

PrioritisePleasure24 · 23/12/2024 09:30

£500 ish on presents/extra food etc. I’m at work a bulk of it and my sister is hosting with me giving a little for costs. My partner will spend time off out and about so minimal extra food needed tbh. No kids between us. Just wider family. I don’t spend crazy money on gifts.

We had a trip away £500 between us earlier this month but not really Christmas.

No new decs needed, A couple of meals out in december catch ups with friends. £100 max .

I save for Christmas so it’s all taken care of. No credit.

CountFucula · 23/12/2024 09:32

A grand. Insane but there it is!

DaphneLaurel · 23/12/2024 09:41

About £200 on gifts for 6 adults and 1 small child, then some other random gifts for friends so probably about £250 in total.

purplespink · 23/12/2024 09:43

@XiCi yeah, we haven't done any of that 😂 I'm pregnant and feel awful so that has naturally limited activities and of course I'm not drinking.

DeepLimeBird · 23/12/2024 09:46

About £2000 I think. And this is a very quiet Christmas as well 😬

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 23/12/2024 10:06

I don't even want to add it up.

thesnailandthewhale · 23/12/2024 10:15

At first I thought:

£500 presents
£150 food

But then remembered the other bits:

£35 tree
£60 new outfit for work night out
£100 trip to London to see the lights
£50 secret santa / work gifts for my team
£20 xmas jumper
£5 stamps for cards

£920 Total

Then the sales shopping starts 😩

Autumndayz77 · 23/12/2024 10:17

Absolutely no idea but not more than I can afford!

Screamingabdabz · 23/12/2024 10:19

I think including food shopping, it is probably around £3000. We can’t afford it so some will be on credit card, some will be overdraft and some Klarna etc. I’ll be paying it off all year and more.

It most definitely isn’t worth it but I don’t know how to do things differently. 😩

Moonchildalltheway · 23/12/2024 10:22

Presents for the 2 kids, about £1.2k, husband £300 and for all other family members about £600. Food and drink for Christmas Day £350 and going out with some Christmas events about £600. We also do a new year sale shop plus a nice meal out so another £800 on that. I always go big at Christmas now we have the funds but when money was tight with the kids were little it was a lot less.

livingafulllife · 23/12/2024 10:25

Depends on where i spend xmas.
Last years Xmas bill was £0.
This year cost me £1500 for my flights hotel so i can miss all the faff I'll be back in the new year when all the crap is over.

oatmy · 23/12/2024 10:26

Me and one teen DS - but presents also for extended family and friends.

£55 tree
£220 for concerts/events
£150 food
£500 presents? I haven't really kept track but that seems about right
We'll probably go for a meal between Christmas and New Year so another £40
We'll also have the heating on which we don't usually do so that will probably cost £80 or so.

So a total of around £1000 which does seem like a lot! I put away £100 a month for Xmas/birthdays.

Viavita · 23/12/2024 10:28

Interesting thread @Anotherloverholeinyohead

Presents for granddaughter aged 10 - £160
Present for granddaughter aged 1 - £6 !!
Presents for dh - £40
Visited sister yesterday and took her a few presents ( she's just got out of hospital), took her for lunch - £150
I didn't do a special Xmas shop, and was given a voucher so £100 in tesco.
Eating out Xmas day - £150 ( for 2 of us).

= £606

I wouldn't say I go mad but it's interesting to see how it still mounts up.
I would say all of it is good value and absolutely worth it.
❤️

About 2k. 4 kids

Jingleberryalltheway · 23/12/2024 10:31

Good question, these are guesstimates.

I’ve probably spent about £200 extra on food.

Christmas days out £200

Gifts - £450

New dreses for the DDs - £65

I normally spend more on food and days out over school holidays anyway. Although that’s usually offset by now swimming, ballet, piano but I wouldn’t spend as much on activities out.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 23/12/2024 10:34

£3.5-£4K on mainly gifts x

twistyizzy · 23/12/2024 10:37

Presents for: DD, MIL, FIL, my parents + 3 x nieces = 1.5K as we went overboard on DD this year (she has had an amazing term at school so that's why we've gone a bit extra)
Food: £400
Gift wrap/Crackers etc: £50
No specific days out this year sadly due to work and school commitments.

So 2K. First year we haven't been to Centre Parcs for the weekend in the run up to Xmas though so that's saved us 1.5K.

LaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaa · 23/12/2024 10:38

A lot.

Probably £2000 on gifts for two children, partner and family. Around 10 people in total.

£150 on activities tomorrow, plus the cost of lunch/drinks etc.

£2000 on a Christmassy weekend break at the beginning of December, that includes spending money and all food and drink.

We’re not hosting so no extra food costs this year.

It’s a lot written down but I can’t tell you what a shit year we’ve had cumulating with a death in the family last week, so I don’t regret it. I saved all year and used a work bonus for a good chunk of it.

PrimalScreaming · 23/12/2024 10:45

£600 - £700 But there aren't any children!

Approx £350 on gifts for about 20 people (including some home made - lucky to have the time to do this I know! Plus parcel postage for about 10 of these!)
£26 Christmas tree (first year for a long time we had a real one)
£20 additional lights (old ones broken)
£20 local Christmas event for 2
£20 Stamps
£200 food (includes some normal stuff and we are out for Xmas dinner this year - usually it's me who hosts. We have hosted a few meals in the run up to Christmas)
£30 booze

Think that's it!

LittleRedRidingHoody · 23/12/2024 10:49

Good thread!

We're away somewhere sunny this year for the first time at Christmas, but before we left:

£200 for me/DS stocking bits (taken with us!) + £100 on DS main gift - left at home for our return 😅

£300? On friends/family gifts, and £150 on supplies for DSs friends gifts/cards (we did the little Santa sleighs out of chocolate bars)

£350 on tips/small gifts (DMs carer/cleaner/binmen/DS teachers)

£300 Christmas trips (2x Christmas markets, ice skating, meeting Santa)

= £1,400? Eating out etc just came out of that normal pot so haven't tracked it. Definitely cheaper as no food bills, hosting costs, or stockings for guests this year 😬

catphone · 23/12/2024 10:50

Too much

catphone · 23/12/2024 10:52

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 23/12/2024 10:06

I don't even want to add it up.

Neither do I haha

Seaitoverthere · 23/12/2024 10:55

£671.50. We are coming toward the end of a renovation so have been keeping a close eye on things.

theworldhasgonebonkers · 23/12/2024 11:04

On top of God knows how much we also put the underfloor heating on in the kitchen ! £6 per day! 😳
