Holiday park keeps ringing me. Why?

user1471867483 · 16/12/2024 07:27

I rang a holiday park a week ago asking if they'd any vacancies for caravan hire over Christmas (7 nights). I asked for a quote, which they gave. I told them we are very very last minute people and probably won't contact them until the very day we're leaving. I told them I'd work commitments and couldn't commit until nearer the time when we're hoping to go (this is my MO whenever we go on holiday - last minute).
Anyway, since they rang, they've called me every day. I picked up twice and said I can't commit just yet and only wanted a quote. On Saturday, they rang again, but this time I didn't pick up and won't do until we're decided we're going.

Why do they keep pestering me and what should I do?

The caravan park likely makes a few hundred in profit if OP books, but likely loses at least £100 if they have unnecessary staff or pay people for cleans that aren't needed. Therefore I can see their dilemma.

I presume if OP is going for a week she would be arriving this weekend. It seems incomprehensible to me that you wouldn't already have made a decision at this point about what you're doing. If there are DCs involved wouldn't they like to know where they'll be on Christmas Eve. What about food for Christmas Day.

They might have an "offer" for you? Just answer, then you will know.

They're a massive site open 12 months a year.

So was ours but the let out ones were not available all year and they know 90% will be empty until March so moth ball them to save damage. It's obvious they have limited staff in quiet periods and nobody to run in at the drop of a hat and prepare a caravan. I think your being unreasonable

Getonwitit · 16/12/2024 09:35

Maybe they are being polite and calling you to inform you they no longer have an availability for the dates you require.

user2848502016 · 16/12/2024 09:39

They want the sale , it's their job

Isatis · 16/12/2024 09:41

Satisfy our curiosity, OP. Why do you always leave things to the last minute? Don't you get disappointed regularly when people tell you it's too late?

anon2022anon · 16/12/2024 09:45

I don't know why people are so angry at you wanting to make a last minute decision- if that's available as an option for the holiday park, then it's their problem to sort out staffing? It's pretty easy to put a deadline on the sales, and say they are only accepting bookings until the 18th or whatever, and they could have told the OP that on the phone. But that's clearly not the case, as they haven't 🤷🏼‍♀️

its quite likely that the caravans are packed up for winter and may need a day of prep for occupancy, very unreasonable to expect to book on the day you plan to arrive!
As others have said they will have staff rotas to organise and if they need to increase staff it's fair to let them know in advance. Remember most staff at holiday parks are minimum wage zero hours contract, they could have saved hard for a Christmas and you deciding on the day that you fancy a break messes up their plans.

A better solution would be for you to arrange a last minute trip abroad, book the same day and see how that works out.

You can buy the flights at the airport so that one would be easy enough I think. Book a hotel while waiting to board.

Regarding the caravan park, probably they have verbally offered more flexibility that they actually want to give and hope that you will realise it without being directly told.

Fluufer · 16/12/2024 09:48

They're just trying to make a sale. Either don't answer, or do and tell them not to call again.
If it were a logistics issue they would just close bookings...

The replies to this post are peak Mumsnet. If a business does not want to take last minute bookings because they need to plan ahead, they can choose not to do so. What is not ok is to constantly call a customer who has told them they won't be booking in advance to try to harass them into booking. If they don't want the OPs late booking they should have said in the initial phone call that they don't take last minute bookings and they should be has x weeks in advance.

But this is not a planning issue. Their sales team are just trying to harass the OP into a sale. It's rude and unpleasant and actually against the law if the OP has asked them not to. How anyone is justifying their behaviour is beyond me.

Thank goodness for a sensible response! Some of the nonsense being posted here is laughable.

People have picked up on the fact that OP has ignored ONE call and have latched onto it to lay into her, trying to prove how much lovelier they are than the OP because they would NEVER treat a business and people just trying to make a living like this, what about the poor staff etc., and gleefully telling her she will probably lose her booking now and that Christmas will be RUINED.

What they’re all ignoring is that the OP called the park in the first place for a quote and said then she wouldn’t be making a booking yet, and has subsequently answered two further calls from them. Could these people trying so hard to run a business not have managed, at any point in these three calls, to say “Just to let you know, the last date we can confirm Christmas bookings is 18 December” (or whenever)? You know, using actual words? And has no one involved in this business ever heard of voicemail? Surely they could have left one when the OP didn’t pick up - just as people often don’t pick up because they’re at work, are driving, in the bath etc.

@NotVeryFunny is bang on - they smelled a potential sale at a quiet time of year and are now pushing it, despite OP saying that if she books, it will be last minute. If that wasn’t an option, they had three phone calls in which to say so. No one is saying a business has to accommodate last minute requests if it isn’t viable - but why not just simply say that?

Retailers somehow all manage to post a deadline for Christmas orders on their websites. Pubs and restaurants all manage to say when they will and won’t be open over Christmas. The Royal Mail has released last dates for posting cards before Christmas for as long as anyone can remember. Why is this caravan park struggling to do this very, very simple thing? Or is it possible that they don’t actually have a deadline, but an overzealous sales manager thinks they’ll chase the OP anyway?

For all those blowing a gasket because “they’re trying to run a business!” - frankly, they’re not trying hard enough if they can’t simply say “We have vacancies, but would need to know by date X”.

Who knows 🤔. People are people but I don't have to agree with their replies - it's only their opinion at the end of the day and it doesn't mean they're right.

That's what I asked when they called the second time, but no. No better offers.

Maybe it works the other way and it will either be too late or have gone up because they need extra staff to accommodate you

Glad someone understands. Thanks. Anyway, update. I can't go anyway now because a hospital appt has come through for next week so I can't go anyway.

Booking on the day for Xmas week? Christ. I bet you’re one of those people who book on the day, leaving them no time to sort staffing, and then leave them a shit review online when it isn’t cleaned to your satisfaction.

Are you just vile about everyone?

Are YOU one of those ‘vile’ people who do this?

Why are you combing back over old threads? Weirdo.
