Where to buy classic men’s clothes for the over 50s without bankrupting ourselves?

Is it just me? I’m finding it really difficult this year.

I’m based in the EU so it’s not a supply issue.
But suggestions from Ireland would be good.

I’m trying to buy my dh a classic quilted jacket for wearing over a v-necked jumper and shirt, to run errands and walk the dog and I can’t find anything that is under £350 or €420?

My budget is about £200. Is that unrealistic do you think?

It’s partly because he is “big and tall” but it’s more that shops like Marks and Next don’t seem to cater for classic middle aged men any more?

Every anorak they sell is either a black puffer type which my dh wouldn’t wear or is in a younger parka style which is over-sized and a billowing shape and looks ridiculous at his age.

He is just the type of bloke that suits classic clothes and looks ridiculous in anything else.

Marks always used to do heavy corduroy trousers and wool jumpers and a classic lightweight anorak for men that was slightly nicer than a basic anorak ifyswim but no more.

In fact there seem to be less coats available overall which may be something to do with on-line shopping I suppose?

Where do older men buy clothes nowadays? Are there particular brands aimed at them which aren’t ££££££?

That should be ‘fewer’ coats shouldn’t it?

Can’t be sure it’s what you’re after but have you had a look at:

Community Clothing?

Sorry, not Ireland. But absolutely classic clothing, carefully made in proper fabrics.

Also worth looking at:

Asket

I absolutely love

Drakes

for men’s clothes. Mostly way beyond your budget but they have excellent sales, so you might find something then.

I do think it’s difficult - ‘traditional’ men’s outfitters tend to divide into the ‘affordable and dowdy’ and the totally gorgeous and unaffordable.

Secondhand - ebay, vinted, etc?

Mum4MrA · 14/12/2024 20:05

Raging Bull do a big and tall range, good quality and they’re not hideously expensive.

WiseLurker · 14/12/2024 20:12

You'd get a barbour jacket for your budget surely?

Thighdentitycrisis · 14/12/2024 20:14

I was going to suggest Barbour too

@Capedays555xyz
can you post a pic of what you want?

Wow! Fantastic!

Thanks very much for all of these recommendations. I’ll have a good luck.

Thank you. I wonder if they have an EU hub? Otherwise, importing items from the US can be costly.

Also, I find US men’s clothes can be quite short in the body which my dh is not. But thank you anyway.

I should have a look at second hand. And I will for every day purchases. I just wanted his present to be new this year as he buys himself nothing!

Thanks. There’s a navy quilted man’s jacket for £290 that looks slightly short in the body. The other style is too expensive.

Maybe my budget is unrealistic? I haven’t bought my dh any clothes for a while. All the of prices have gone up a lot.

He does wear stuff until it falls apart though.

Thank you Thighdentitycrisis (great nn 😀)
and Wiselurker

I suppose I was looking for something quite light but warm and don’t know if that fits the bill? Also, a bit too posh looking maybe?

I appreciate the suggestion though!

How big and how tall? Would suggest Barbour as well but they don’t do a longer range.

shoofly · 14/12/2024 20:52

Lands End must ship from UK, I'm in Northern Ireland and order from them. They also have big and tall stuff in men's range

StormingNorman · 14/12/2024 20:56

Have you tried the “country outfitter” sites:

Alan Paine
Griggs
Orvis
William Powell
County & Outdoors

They often have discounts vis a vis the brands’ own sites.

Capedays555xyz · 14/12/2024 21:05

Bingo! That’s it! Perfect, thank you so much!

I might have to post it to a friend in the UK and give it is a NY present instead!

Thank you so much!
