Dessert ideas for party

I'm hosting a Christmas get together for between Christmas and New Yer, there'll be around 5 families so roughly 10 adults and 10 children.

What would people suggest for desserts? It's not going to be a sit down meal, more a help yourself. I'm an ok baker, can give most things a go with a recipe.

I was thinking:

  • something fruity like a lemon meringue pie
  • something chocolatey like a torte or chocolate mousse
  • cupcakes for the kids
  • plenty of ice cream, flakes etc

Maybe something else like a crumble or bread and butter pudding?

What goes down well?

They sound absolutely perfect / you could even get marshmallows and sprinkles for a little ice cream station for the kids

banoffee pie is always a winner too

Lemon chiffon is divine. Also use lime or orange. It’s much lighter/moussey than lemon meringue.

If you have small glasses, you can make little individual trifle thingies

Ooh, that looks delicious and much easier to make too!

Something like syllabub or panna cotta that you can make in advance, set in small glasses or teacups, and make easy single-servings.

An apple or fruit strudel is a doddle if you use shop bought filo, or completely cheat and buy frozen ones that you bake, they are delicious with clotted cream ice cream.

A big raspberry jam roly-poly cooked on a rack over water is a big crowd pleaser and easily doubled to feed 12+ I use a recipe by the school cook who worked with jamie Oliver on that school dinners show, added bonus it's cheap too - serve with thick vanilla custard and fresh raspberries if desired.

A chocolate upside down pudding is another crowd pleaser. You make the thick chocolate batter, put in a taller over proof ceramic dish, then you pour on top a mix of brown sugar, white sugar and cocoa then pour on hot water, straight into the oven (no mixing) and it magically comes out cooked cakey dessert on top and thick chocolate custardy sauce on the bottom! It's an American recipe book.

Hot proper puddings are quite a treat these days as so often we have cold ones. Apologies for no actual recipe as my books are still packed up!

I'd do a trifle. So easy and for some weird reason, everyone seems to love it.

Maybe brownies are easier to share than a torte.

Pannetone bread and butter pudding is divine. Food of the Gods. A friend made it for me two years ago and I dreamed for it for weeks. Made my own last year and making it again this year.

Blackcurrant no bake cheesecake is a favourite here and so easy to make
Start with digestive biscuit base, add cheese which is a small bottle of whipped double cream, 2 tubs mascarpone cheese, caster sugar and vanilla.
Topped with a jar of blackcurrant jam.
