I wasn’t able to get a delivery slot anywhere and due to work likely to not be able to until Christmas Eve morning - I am worrying this will be too late.

Yes, every year. Well DH does, not me. We’ve never had any issues getting what we need.

Moier · 13/12/2024 11:55

Actually Christmas eve has been a lot more quiet than the 22nd and 23rd...due to everyone panicking and going earlier.
I always found plenty of stock in on Christmas eve at both Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencers.
Daughter is going Christmas eve .. while l have Grandson.

Most years! I just make sure I've done all the non perishables in advance then get to the supermarket for 6am, quick sweep and out. Disclaimer: veggie so no idea if it would work with getting a turkey or pigs in blankets etc

Bakedpumpkin · 13/12/2024 11:58

On that’s good I will need to go to M&S I hope they do restock on the finger bits in addition to main items ?

I always did this when the kids were little. 8am trip to Sainsbury's. It would be fully stocked and not crazy busy.

Livingthedream1978 · 13/12/2024 12:00

Yes every year I am at the butchers at 7am when it opens and straight to Asda 2 invites away to do the food shop. It’s busy but not crazy!

KittenPause · 13/12/2024 12:02

We collect orders and buy a few bits and pieces

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 13/12/2024 12:02

Our local Aldi does the best discounts on meat and other bits on xmas eve. I have been there the last few years and always manage to get some extra meat to stock up the freezer, usually at 75% off. I have never seen a shortage of veg or anything else in there.

TheRozzers · 13/12/2024 12:04

Yes, M&S at 8am. It's fine as long as you can be a bit adaptable with ingredients if things are unavailable.

Turkeys are almost always reduced.

twistyizzy · 13/12/2024 12:05

Yes every year. I choose 7am Xmas eve pick up for M+S and 8am Sainsbury's. Means the shops are quiet but fully stocked to pick up any last minute items + no issues with parking + longer BB dates

JaneandtheLaundry · 13/12/2024 12:06

A few years I've gone on Christmas Eve evening around 5pm and found lots of great yellow sticker deals and plenty of food, as long as you don't have your heart set on something unusual and specific.

TiredEyesToday · 13/12/2024 12:16

I thought I wouldn’t get an online slot as had all booked up months ago- but I logged onto waitrose the other night to do a regular shop, and happened to spot that a slot had opened up on the 22nd. It’s worth checking back with the online supermarkets periodically whether a random slot might have appeared.

PullTheBricksDown · 13/12/2024 12:20

Yes, and as people say it's busy but not mad. I have been known to pop back around 4pm as then you will see stuff discounted, including joints, but you've got to have nerves of steel to rely on that for your Christmas main. I don't do that but I do grab anything else going. On Christmas Eve morning everything is well stocked.

ConflictofInterest · 13/12/2024 12:24

Yes we do every year and never find it's that busy and it's always fully stocked. Its part of our Christmas routine now. I do an early December online shop of cupboard type Christmas things and drinks that will store then we get the treats and fresh bits on Xmas eve morning. I had much more trouble with things being out of stock in my online delivery when I used to try and get one in close to Christmas, it became such a pain as I had to go shopping again anyway I gave up and started enjoying popping in on Christmas eve.

Rainbow1901 · 13/12/2024 12:30

I don't tend to online shop and have never had a issue. Many stores are open later in the run up to Christmas so it's easy enough to get most things needed one eveing. But if circumstances allow - I don't mind a potter on Xmas Eve - it's usually a nice atmosphere on that day.

Redcrayons · 13/12/2024 12:30

I usually do for all perishable stuff.

I start building up the stock of non perishables like treats and booze throughout December. I’m keeping an eye on BBE dates for stuff like cheese and cream and will get them when I know they’ll last till after Christmas.

Get there when it opens or before 8am if it’s a 24 hour and you should be fine.

2dogsandabudgie · 13/12/2024 12:30

I think shopping on Christmas Eve can be a bit hit and miss. Some years I find there's everything in stock other years lots of things sold out.

I would buy certain things in advance and freeze such as pigs in blankets, sausage meat, bacon, sausage rolls etc depending on what's on your list.

Also popular non perishables like cranberry sauce, stuffing mix, pickled onions, gravy etc I buy in advance.

Extraspecial · 13/12/2024 12:32

I always go shopping early on Christmas Eve morning BUT you can’t leave everything until then as there is usually something that has run out eg cranberry sauce and then you have to go to another store.

CautiousLurker01 · 13/12/2024 12:34

Yes. I collect the preordered stuff then but always find I’ve not got loads of stuff - whether is Tesco. Waitrose, M&S or Sainsbury’s, they have LOADS on Xmas eve morning. Just go early and you’ll be fine. You’ll likely pick up some discounted turkeys too, especially if you pop back in at the end of the day - they always mark them down to half price in my local waitrose.

Theperenniallaunderess · 13/12/2024 12:41

Mum does an M&S shop every year on Christmas Eve. Get there when it opens and you’ll have a lovely quiet shop. We’ve never found they have been running low on anything.

DrunkenKoala · 13/12/2024 12:41

I got a Turkey on Christmas Eve last year fine - in fact lots of fresh foods available but things like mince pies, cranberry sauce etc were all sold out

Itstime1 · 13/12/2024 12:47

Yes every year. Aldi the Asda or M m&S depending on which shop I haven’t managed to get too.

My dad loves going last thing Christmas Eve for all his bargains. Shops are well stocked in the morning as well. You should be ok!

Bakedpumpkin · 13/12/2024 13:42

Thanks I think I will go for it, yes I got the last pigs in blankets on 23rd in Waitrose one year so will get those next week and cheese if the dates are ok plus booze. I am checking for online slots daily but I see some items have already sold out for delivery so think I’ll just chance it. Need to clear freezer space for turkey.

FusionChefGeoff · 13/12/2024 18:40

You can get loads of stuff in early - most of what's in the shops on 22/23/24 is already in warehouses now and will keep perfectly fine until the shops put it out - so you can do the same!

Potatoes
Parsnips
Carrots

Will all keep well stored in cold, dark area.

Ham / gammon / turkeys / pigs in blankets can all be frozen - the gammon I bought today is good until after Xmas doesn't even need to freeze.

Pate and cheese all good if you buy and store unopened in the fridge.

All the snacks / chocolate / mince pies fine now.

You're really only left with cream / milk!!

RubyRedBow · 13/12/2024 18:44

I have in the past and it’s always been very quiet but stocked.
