I spent £190 this week on posh olive oil and tinned fish for DP.

Fuck my life.

We can afford it. He'll enjoy it. But saying it out loud sounds mental.

What's the most extravagant present you've ever bought someone?
Was it money well spent?

I spent far too much on ex partners. PADI diving course in Sardinia, F1 driving lesson, hotel stays in various cities, £300 on top of the range car mud mats was one I still can't get my head around...

A bottle of Salon champagne for a champagne buff who was desperate to try it.
At that time about £600. Would be way more now I expect.

When we were boyfriend and girlfriend we were booked to go for a once in a lifetime trip to New York and I surprised dh with helicopter tickets so we could fly around the city. It was amazing!

We are a very normal family with nothing fancy but it was so much fun to go on adventures before settling down and having kids.

DistractMe · 12/12/2024 15:11

We often don't bother with presents. DH would rather receive nothing than something he neither wants nor needs. But this year, for his recent birthday he asked for a specific book, which I did buy him. It's a survey of ancient Greek city states and cost £435.

I should add he's not a professional historian, this is just amateur interest, so entirely frivolous.

An IPad Pro and Apple Pencil for my child’s main present a couple of Christmases ago. It’s not odd but is extravagant for a little girl.

A holiday to Marrakesh - four star hotel, flights, me paying for restaurant meals etc.

It was dreadful; it rained nearly every day, was chilly at times, (now ex-)DP got scammed and the pollution and poor treatment of animals was off the scale. I'll never go back.

Id never even heard of this until today. I think I’d be too scared of losing it to wear it!

I took my mum to the Caribbean for her 80th. We both loved it.

I bought DS a totally knackered musical instrument from ebay so we could do it up. It was expensive and when it arrive it stank of mould. However, we did manage to salvage it and we enjoyed it. I'm now desperately hoping we can recoup the £1000 it cost in the end by reselling it.
