Grocery shopping

Just been looking online for dates for home delivery of Christmas groceries and was surprised to note that 99% pf delivery slots seem to be fully booked already. Thought I'd try Sainsbury's for a change (I like their products) but was shocked to see they have a low value supplementary charge of £5 for orders of under £50. I'm not paying that much for home delivery, Christmas or not, as I could be using that £5 to buy groceries !

Then considered Tesco's - again I like their products - but not their delivery charges, Asda products are also good and normally if I don't mind a delivery after 9 pm on a midweek I can get my groceries delivered for £1.50, which is much more reasonable IMHO. However the delivery slots are filling up rapidly and I'm beginning to suspect I'll have to get my trusty 4-wheel shopping trolley and go do my Christmas grocery shopping in person.

Lidl here I come, then - they're cheapest but don't do home deliveries, so if I want to shop there I have to go in person.

A lot of supermarkets released their Christmas slots weeks ago. We have on on the 23rd and one on the 24th at different supermarkets. Lidl is great for Christmas stuff we've been picking up crisps etc from there for weeks

Try Morrisons. Their minimum spend is only £25.

Christmas delivery dates are released in late September and early October. There is always a higher minimum spend for slots in the few days before Christmas. I’m surprised there are any slots available at all. You are just in time to preorder Christmas food for collection but the deadlines are looming.. On the plus side, you might find some bargains if you shop in person at the last minute on Christmas Eve if you are on a tight budget. Lidl have great Christmas stuff so enjoy spending the savings on delivery costs on treats!

Honestly, I think you’re just too late to try and secure a spot. As others have said, supermarkets release their Christmas slots in the Autumn. I think I booked mine in October. I have a delivery pass so only pay a few pounds every month for my weekly delivery.

i have been left down with online christmas shopping in the past,
goods not available,
so now i go in person

I've given up on Christmas delivery, I'll go to Lidl and then Booths, probably the morning of the 23rd early.

I have always opted out of delivery at this time of year. I use it all year round but I'm not getting involved in what looks like a big faff of getting online and sitting in a queue when the slots are released.
Plus, every year on here there are loads of threads from people who have lots missing from their orders when they turn up.
I pick up non perishables in my weekly shop as I go along and then brave the crowds just before Christmas. I don't feel like it's any more stressful actually.

Tescos is £50 min spend throughout the year. They upped it from £40 a while ago. Slots got released weeks/months ago.

LostInTheMoonlight · 12/12/2024 08:04

I got our Tesco and Morrisons delivery slots weeks ago when they were released as we have delivery passes and have a delivery from each most weeks. Just need to complete the orders by the 20th I think.

SallyWD · 12/12/2024 08:06

I think £5 is OK. You're not only getting your shopping delivered but picked too. Must take over 30 minutes to pick it. That seems reasonable to me.

Slots are always booked up a while in advance. Everyone knows that.....well mostly everyone. 😆

I booked my Sainsbury’s slot mid October, as I do every year.
