So I always host Christmas dinner, I’ve 22 to cook for this year! Needless to say I don’t fancy cooking much on Christmas Eve, I’m also doing some prep for the next day. I’ve a DH and three teenagers to cook for.Just wondering what kinds of meals you serve up on Christmas Eve that are low effort but still nice ! Looking for inspiration. Thanks

It's Christmas Eeeeevvveeee Geoff, peel a satsuma, crack a nut!

Samandytimlucypeterolivia · 08/12/2024 23:19

Chinese, every year… no cooking, just a 5 min for collection, takes the pressure off a bit.

We had our pigs in blankets on Christmas eve last year because we can't manage them with the main roast dinner any more it's just too much. There's only two of us so nobody else to worry about pleasing. We use normal size sausages instead of fiddling around with the traditional wee ones and this year we're going into have a fried egg each & some sweet chilli sauce as well, simple but delicious

Either quiche or pizza with salad - something you can throw in the oven with zero effort.

I usually cook something for Christmas Eve dinner but this year have decided that's when all the 'that's for Christmas!' food will be opened. The ham will have been cooked, so we will have some of that along with the cheese and pickles etc I'm quite looking forward to it tbh

This has been lovely to read everyone's traditions.
We have sandwiches cut into triangles, lots of them served on the big rectangle serving plate we got as a wedding gift. Tuna, cheese, chicken as fillings and some beige pastry things alongside the sandwich extravaganza! There will always be a king prawn ring served too.

This idea of a sandwich extravaganza tradition melted my heart, I love this!

Takeaway

Ponderingwindow · 09/12/2024 00:47

We have a big formal, family meal on Christmas Eve. It used to be traditional food from a home country, but these days it tends towards a roast and sides.

Frostingle · 09/12/2024 00:57

Scrambled egg and toast. Hot chocolate and maybe some shortbread later watching a movie.

Christmas day starts with a cooked breakfast, 3 course dinner and cheese course plus chocolate/crisps/sandwiches while drinking into the evening. Minimal food on Christmas Eve or no one would make it through!

MrsBungle · 09/12/2024 01:14

We usually go out for lunch so only need a picky tea. Beige party food and hot chocolate

timetodecide2345 · 09/12/2024 03:42

Usually we order a sushi platter and follow it with macarons but this year I fancy something different but catering to one veggie so really not sure.

Ham, egg and chips

Jk987 · 09/12/2024 07:22

Your husband and 3 teens should cook and you put your feet up.
Surely they don't except you to produce a meal?

Pascha · 09/12/2024 07:24

We've done party food carpet picnic in the past but now the kids are older I just fancy ordering Indian takeaway and having done with it.

MaltipooMama · 09/12/2024 07:26

We're going over to my family on Christmas Eve as we spend Christmas Day at home and I think they're doing a curry!

This post nailed it

The answer to your question is that your DH fixes dinner (and hopefully helps Christmas day too). Why on earth should you be worrying about this?

rzb · 09/12/2024 07:38

Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon for breakfast, a veg-heavy soup (tbd) for lunch, and a cheese and charcuterie board with all the trimmings in the evening.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 09/12/2024 07:54

Sausage rolls, honey sausages, crisps, dips.

Toomanysquishmallows · 09/12/2024 07:56

We always have pizza .

reluctantbrit · 09/12/2024 08:20

M&S slow cook pulled pork and beef brisket.

Not sure about sides and dessert yet.

boobot1 · 09/12/2024 08:44

We have a turkey beef and pork for christmas dinner, so I do 2 joints of beef and have hot beef stotties for tea on christmas eve as I have to cook the beef anyway.

M&S party food, nice bread and cheese, olives, etc. Lay it all out on the sideboard and everyone grazes whilst playing our watching TV.

If I was you I think I'd order in pizza tbh. I'd be perfectly happy with pizza and wedges.

This is exactly what we do. M&S party food and Christmas movie!

Roystonv · 09/12/2024 09:20

I asked dh what he would like this year and he wants fish fingers, tinned tomatoes and fried bread - so festive! A favourite meal from childhood - he is 71 so I am obliging.

OAPapparently · 09/12/2024 09:23

We did make your own pizzas last year, which the DC liked as they like picking their own toppings.
