My grandad is 85 lives alone doesn't have any real hobbies. Instead of figuring out what to buy a few of us are clubbing together to fill a hamper. Need some inspiration please.

Depends what your grandad likes

I used to do this for all my elderly relatives. Got a plain csrdboard box wrapped it in gift wrap and when ready covered with cellophane.

Mine were filled with practical but nice items depending on what they like.
M&S teabags
Red salmon
Soups
Iced Christmas Bar.
Jam
Chocolate biscuits.
Bottle of wine

They looked lovely and were really well appreciated even if I say so myself.

Gentleman's Relish - that's what my dad always wanted anyway.

"Naice" version of their favourite foods.

If he lives alone, it might be good to keep things small.

Biscuits that are individually wrapped.

Small bottles wine or whiskey or whatever his tipple of choice is.

Mini Christmas cake.

Small jar of nice mustard.

Garners do the best pickled onions and red cabbage, if those are things he might like.

Nice crackers (small packets) - Nairns oatcakes are usually wrapped about 5/6 in one sachet.

  • Bird feeder for the garden or window version, packet of seed/lard ball things
  • House plant with little bottle of plant feed
  • Unless diabetic, box of chocs, fruit jelly sweets, marron glace
  • Nice tea bags
  • Warm gloves, scarf or socks

Fully depends on what he likes. When I do family hampers I make them up to suit the individual, example

MIL - gin, candles, something gardening, something in favourite colours
FIL - favourite tea, mug, favourite biscuits, something gadgetie, something related to his football team or hobbies…

A nice mug is always a good addition to a hamper (maybe a tin one for gardening?)

If you can keep chilled until the day perhaps pork pie / pate / scotch egg

Maybe a separate mini hamper that must be kept in the fridge for ideas like above and cheese.

I'd check the dates on stuff to try to make sure all the food won't need eating within a few days.

No mugs!

I think stick to food and drink, personally. I bet he's got more mugs than he will ever use already.

Nice tins of sardines/mackerel if he likes them

Little tins/pots of fruit

These to have with cheese https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/opies-cornichons-onions/854871-697926-697927

My DDad 79 on a Christmas theme likes-

Christmas pudding, Brandy butter
Christmas cake
Mince pies
Cheeses
Crackers
Dates
Port
Kircsh and Creme de Cassis

That's all very sweet I know!
