The perfect stocking?

It is my DD’s first Christmas and I would like to get her a really special stocking that she will hopefully keep forever and I didn’t think it would be so difficult to find one 😓

I already got one on Etsy but it is just too small for what I’m after.

I want a big, squishy, good quality stocking that can hold a fair amount - thinking small wooden toy(s), some books, plush/dolly etc. Ideally personalised with name or initial. I like velvet ones or liberty fabric (ideally both). Does such thing exist?

I don’t mind spending a bit more on it if it’s perfect and really good quality, up to £50 max though.

£50 for liberty print might be a stretch. Would you consider making your own? Then you can make it the exact size you want. Or contact stocking makers on Etsy and see if they'll do a special commission?

I knew a clothes maker and she made me a sack. One green and one red for my kids. With a Christmas print and some rope to tie it.
Sacks are so much easier than stockings too.
We've had them 10 years and I absolutely love them. Worth looking locally to see if anyone offers this. I chose the fabric too. Unfortunately no longer in business but there's plenty on Instagram

Anything here?

Look at By Alex on instagram

A tip… you need 2 identical stockings so you can hang up one stocking, then sneak in to replace it with the second stocking filled with gifts without waking them up!

Thanks everyone! Going between by Alex velvet and stripes one, a velvet sack from myfirstyears or this one from Etsy.

I like the look of the Etsy one the most I think, just wish I could see it in real life before spending £45 on one that might not be perfect…

For reference this is the one I got before and love it, it’s just so small it won’t even fit one book in and we love books in this family!

T K Maxx had loads of Christmas sacks in the other day but I'm not sure re stockings because we already have some but worth a look

I really liked the sacks though

KittenPause · 07/12/2024 21:44

It would be very easy to make one yourself though if you can't find any big enough

John Lewis have loads of nice Christmas stockings in stock

One thing to consider is are you likely to have any more children? If so, you may want to consider buying two of them (if you want them matching).

I make them. A lot of my friends are slightly quirky so I’ve made dozens with zombie pin up girls, weird shapes like dragon or mermaid tails, character fabrics etc. (I don’t sell them, so I’m not trying to do a sneaky sale!).

Can you sew? It’s really the best way to get the perfect fabric and lining and the exact size you want. I like to add a bit of quilting to them as well, just to give it a bit more interest. If you want a specific design, like the Grinch for instance, you can get stocking panels that have the front and back of a stocking and you just sew them together and add a lining and anything else you want. The only issue with these is that they do tend to be very small and narrow unless you spend a bit more and get one from an American designer, like I did for my DN who could fit inside his stocking for the first couple of years. I added tiny jingle bells to it as well, and put his name on it in vinyl, to give it a bit of interest. That probably cost me around £70 all in, but nobody will have anything like it and it will last him forever.

The alternative to a stocking is a sack. You can get an iron on vinyl decal of their name on Etsy, or from anyone you know with a Cricut machine, to personalise it and you’d be able to fill it with books.
