Anatomy gift for 5 year old

Mummabear04 · 05/12/2024 22:59

My DD is obsessed with an Osborne anatomy book a gave her. It talks about oxygen entering the lungs through the blood stream and about brain signals and digestion. It's very age appropriate and absolutely fantastic but is there anything else that I could get her? A lot of the anatomy toys I've seen are for older children but I'd really love to get her a gift that develops her interest. Any suggestions?

How about a doctors dress up kit with stethoscope, medical bag etc if she is interested in the human body and how it works. Bit of fun role play.
She sounds so intelligent!

happytobee · 05/12/2024 23:04

This might be the same one you’re talking about but looks fab for that age range?

Human body book

The models with removable organs look really cool but they all do say 7/8+.

HarrietSchulenberg · 05/12/2024 23:05

Doctor's kit and the game Operation?

LilacLilyBird · 05/12/2024 23:06

Don't underestimate her

The older kids toys might be perfect for her

happytobee · 05/12/2024 23:07

Just found this which looks good too!

Human body game.

I'm not too sure if this is too old but there is a fantastic book called "The Human Body - A Three-Dimensional Study" by Jonathan Miller published in 1983.

It's a sort of 3D pop-up showing how everything works internally. It really is good and I can recommend it for young children as well.

The one big downside is that the book is no longer in print. You can only get secondhand copies of it. Prices vary but are typically £10- £30 depending on condition.

Here are reviews of it from Goodreads

[EDIT]

This is rather more grown up than the book recommended by @happytobee

[/EDIT]

People of a certain age, may recognise the name Jonathan Miller from, amongst other things, the 1978 TV series "The Body in Question" which was about the human body

What about the Galt Body Lab? It's 6+ but I've got my 5 year old another of their sets, I think a bright 5 year old would enjoy it.

RosaBaby2 · 05/12/2024 23:29

I'd be getting one of those soft toys with removable organs. I can't remember what the decent brand is called but there are lots of cheaper versions.

LilacLilyBird · 06/12/2024 00:55

These are things you can do at home together or she can do alone if she's up to it at her age

www.stem.org.uk/resources/elibrary/resource/34276/brilliant-bodies

Scroll down and preview then download

I think these would be perfect for her at some point soon if not now

LilacLilyBird · 06/12/2024 00:57

Anyway it's a fantastic resource for budding scientists and your DD sounds fabulous and very curious

LilacLilyBird · 06/12/2024 01:55

I'd definitely buy this and see how she gets on with it

If it's too much then just put it away till she's ready

It looks really good actually

My DS had a human body not really a toy more a learning aid but the internal organ fitted back into the body cavity. They would only fit if put in the correct place.

HelloJackieULookNice · 06/12/2024 03:09

I Heart Guts do great plush organs if you think she might appreciate something like that.

Some of the anatomical sets are more basic than others so definitely have a look. I bought one for my daughter at the same age. She loved them and they're a great tool.

I think I bought her the pregnancy one.

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 06/12/2024 05:35

Oh wow, @Another2Cats we had that book when I was a child and I would spend hours looking at it. I vividly remember the eye!

We had a bunch of these www.giantmicrobes.com/uk/ when our kids were small, prompted by eldest child declaring his play dough was a macrophage eating everything up!

LilacLilyBird · 07/12/2024 12:41

Not an anatomical present

But at that age I absolutely loved my big fat Richard Scarry book which had all sorts of stuff in it to explore and look at

Mipil · 07/12/2024 14:45

DS had some simple anatomy models at that age (many many years ago so I don’t have a specific recommendation). I think they came from Bright Minds. The Science Museum and Wellcome Collection shops are good for this type of thing.

There are play doh doctor and dentist sets. Magnetic and jigsaw anatomy sets eg Melissa and Doug. You can get organ aprons where you stick on plushy organs with Velcro. Anatomy colouring books for kids (not the ones for medical students 😂) or craft kits (eg Baker Ross). The Bill Bryson human body book and Kay’s Anatomy are for slightly older kids (7+) but she might enjoy you reading them to her.

You can also get a very cheap paediatric stethoscope with clip on animal faces for about £15.

Thank you so much for all these suggestions, they are great! I've ordered a copy of that book @Another2Cats for the bargain price of £3!!! DMIL is going to get her the puzzle game @17caterpillars1mouse

I love the idea of the anatomy model but I think it will put us over budget so will keep this in my back pocket for her birthday! Thanks again everyone, such good ideas!
