We are having a Christmas party with some friends who have children ages 1-2 years old. I have a DS who is 9 months. i have been volunteered to organise some party games for the kids because i am a teacher. I have no ideas except decorating christmas biscuits and maybe pass the parcel. Does anyone have any good ideas?

I think they are bit young for games.
Pass the parcel would only work if the parent sits with their child and half the children (babies really) would fidget and get bored.
Just get some Christmas music to jump around too and maybe some bubbles.

I would keep it simple and just bring along some toys and put Christmas music on for them to dance to. Or you could do some Christmas themed sensory trays or playdoh with Christmas cookie cutters if you don't mind a bit of mess.

Pass the parcel is unlikely to go well with most 1-2 year olds as they haven't usually got the capacity to take turns and share.

Expect tears if you take a brightly coloured parcel out of their hands to give to someone else. They are too young for party games.

I was thinking pass the parcel with the parents doing the work. Everyone wants games, thats the problem. We normally have a Christmas party with games. Its just now we all have young children so everyone wants children games. Its more for the adults because i know kids that age don't care about party games. I live in a foreign country where they dont celebrate Christmas so our Christmas party is special for them.

Why not do a find the parcel instead? The adult takes the child and finds a parcel and the child opens it, not much of a game but more controllable! Just make sure they all get one

Yes maybe a treasure hunt where every child gets something (like a Easter Egg hunt but with Christmas things).
They really won't do games though at that age. They might sit in a circle and sing songs. You could do Jingle Bells and they all have a bell or shaker thing to make a noise with.

So the oldest child is 2? Games are not going to happen at that age as they just won't understand the concept or have the patience to wait their turn etc. Even craft activities like colouring in / decorating biscuits are pushing it for under-twos. We used to make festive PlayDoh (gingerbread - make it brown and add ground ginger to the mix, or green with peppermint essence, add glitter etc), but I wouldn't do that with babies.

make salt dough handprints or decorate baubles with them? or Christmas cards - Christmas stickers, stamps etc. (obviously with parents taking the lead.)

Christmas disco.

If you’re a sensory bin type of household, some sort of Christmas themed set up?

Lucky dip for a little wrapped up gift each?

God this reminds me of a Xmas party we went to where they did this with kids that kind of age. It was absolute carnage, toddlers in tears, wrestling the parcel off the kid next to them, not letting go.

I'd just stick some music on and let them have a dance. Musicals bumps might be doable by some of them.

Greentomatoes21 · 25/11/2024 09:34

You could do a version of musical statues where they just have to sit down quickly when the music stops. We used to call it musical bumps. Wouldn't put anyone out - maybe give stickers for the fastest ones to sit down. Think parents would need to guide their kids through most games at this age.

These are great ideas. Thank you so much. I will have a think about what to do and the space we have. Love the lucky dip idea. Definitely going to do that when people leave. Maybe the salt dough hands and Christmas songs
