Christmas Lights London

We are going to be in London next weekend and would like to see some Christmas Lights. We are all late 50s and thought of walking up regent street and Oxford street. Does this sound ok? We are eating later near Covent Garden so would like to end up there at the end of our walk. We have a few hours and would maybe stop off for a drink/visit a couple of shops. We don’t really know London so any advice would be appreciated.

Walking the length of Oxford street will not be fun, it’ll be packed and fast moving and not very festive! I would do a little loop, up Bond Street, across Oxford street (so you’ll still see the lights there) and through carnaby street which always has lovely lights and decorations.

Regent St lights are quite pretty but it's so busy. Oxford St isn't fun to walk up and the lights tend to be underwhelming.
For pretty Christmas vibes I recommend looking at the Fortnum and Masons window display on Piccadilly and wandering up and down some of the arcades like Burlington Arcade. Bond St is pretty too although I think this year's lights are sponsored by Chanel and involve Chanel perfume bottles.
I haven't been this year but Covent Garden often has nice lights and a good Christmassy vibe.

Carnaby street is also a good place to stop for a drink, has some nice little bars. There is a little Christmas market in the middle of Leicester Square which might be worth a visit on your way to Covent Garden.

Regent’s street are the best imho. If up for a bit of walking you could start at Marble Arch and walk all along Oxford Street and then turn onto Regent’s street at Oxford Circus. Stop in at Liberty half way down. From Piccadilly Circus to Convent Garden is a bit of walk but a nice one if you walk through some of the smaller streets and then via Floral Street. If wanting to really linger I’d bin off the Oxford Street leg as it’s a bit of a dump these days.

Above recommendations also good. All of this is in a very small area so completely doable on foot.

Yes unless you particularly have to be there I would avoid Oxford St. (But getting off the tube at Bond St station might be a good starting point.) I would walk down Bond St taking in all the expensive shops that make a huge effort with their own decorations, as far as Piccadilly, check out the windows of Fortnum & Mason, then back up Regent St, go to Liberty then Carnaby St. It’s walkable from there to Covent Garden.

Thanks everyone. I have taken notes and look forward to our visit. Will definitely include Liberty and Carnaby Street.

I think I’d start with a wander along South Bank, then head over to Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden, Seven Dials, Regent St, finishing up in Carmaby St.

Oh sorry, my post was aimed at another thread about seeing Christmas lights, but that route probably still works and would while away a couple of hours.

Although there aren't specific Christmas "lights", I think Harrods food hall is really festive at Christmas. For lunch or tea and cake, try the Victorian/Gothic cafe at the V and A and then hop on the tube at South Kensington to Covent Garden.
Oxford Street is not particularly nice so I'd avoid that.
Regent Street is nice but carnaby Street will be very crowded with teenagers. Piccadilly is fun for Fortnum and Masons

Friendofdennis · 25/11/2024 00:48

Liberty will be lovely. Go inside as well as it is very atmospheric

lostoldname · 25/11/2024 00:53

The lights on Oxford street are beautiful this year but the same all the way along as are the ones on Regent street so you can just dip and out of them rather than walk along the whole road.

Please please be careful with your phones and purses the phone snatchers and thieves are everywhere and in central London it is an all time high for crime like this. Other than that, hope you have a great time! Old Bond Street is also great to see the luxury store lights and the arcades are lovely around there.

urbanbuddha · 25/11/2024 01:13

Selfridges’ windows’ lights are usually worth a look. Carnaby Street lights are disappointing this year although Carnaby Street itself is fine, and Bond Street is sponsored by and glorifying Chanel no. 5.

Has anyone been in liberty's this year? Decorations any good this year??
