Im wondering if anyone can provide their opinions on Christmas gifting
I have 1 child and all my family in laws as well as my siblings have 2 children
My daughter gets a gift of around 20 or less but I'm expected to give cash or vouchers for at least 20 per child!
Am I being out of order but I'm paying out double and it's a lot at Christmas

Has somebody actually told you that they expect you to buy a gift or voucher of at least £20? Or is this what you imagine they think?

Why not just buy a £10 gift for each child if for you gift giving is a financial exchange. Where is your DH in all this in some are in-laws?

We have 9 nieces who are extremely spoilt by grandparents etc. we had no children and my mother in law brought it up that it was costing me and my husband a lot of money at Christmas/Birthdays and we all decided as a family to no longer do gifts and only grandparents and parents would buy for the children. Most years the kids had no idea what we had bought them because they get so much.

We’re the same but there’s so many kids we don’t buy for them anymore we instead arrange a family day out/ get together. The kids get enough from parents/ grandparents and to be honest it’s way more memorable to do something together instead.

My child provides a gift list of items she would like for Christmas, but family always requests money or vouchers

Are your nephews and nieces older than your dd? Money and vouchers tends to be the go-to for older kids who put it towards a more expensive item.

This is just how it is in families. I have 2 dc, but my brother has 3. All children get the same spent on them.

Snorlaxo · 19/11/2024 22:09

I would expect all of the kids to have a similar amount spent on them rather than each family have the same amount spent because the other families have an extra kid.

If one family had one child and my family had 5 kids then I’d spend more on your child because it’s not fair that you spend 5 times as much but it might be £50 rather than £100. I’m assuming that both families are similar in wealth btw.

I think when you do the gift list thing, this will always happen.

Ignore the money voucher thing and get what you can afford and maybe sack off the gift list for yours.

That's how it is in our family too. All the kids are family members in their own right. But if it's getting too expensive, op you could tell everyone that you are tightening your belt from herein.
