Gift for 70 year old Woman

I'm tasked every year with picking something up for my dad to give his sister - why he doesn't get his partner to do this I have no idea she's nearer her age!!
I have in the past got her candle gift sets which have always gone done well. I'm looking to spend £40ish and I have bought her a lovely scarf so it can't be that.
Any ideas??

Maybe his partner refuses to do “wife work’ and tells him to do it himself! 😁
In all seriousness, give us some clues as to what she does/likes. Being 70 is not a clue. I know women in their seventies who regularly cycle miles with the local clubs or are active in other interests.

I'm in my 70s and hoping for some knee high Doc Martens.

Crunched · 17/11/2024 18:09

Comedy club tickets?
My aunt (72) is getting a cardamon bun cookery class! but she has specifically asked for that!

JaneandtheLaundry · 17/11/2024 18:12

Something the person is interested in/likes? I bet at 70 they've had 7 decades of people getting them age-appropriate shite like bath stuff and chocs, and I'd hazard they would really love a present that says "for all the years you've lived on this earth, I know you well and you've touched my life." Bit difficult if you don't know them but might be worth asking around of people who do know them to find out what their hobbies are (or asking them what they're into, in a casual conversation, if possible).

DelphiniumBlue · 17/11/2024 18:13

Yes, what are her interests?
In one of my hobby groups there are women of that age, and we would all like some kind of light that you wear either around your neck or head as there isn't enough light to do the job properly where we practice. It's also very cold there, so warm things ( scarf, gloves, bootliners) would go down well.
But your aunt might not have the same past-times, and might not like any of that. It's not so much about her age than about her interests. If she's into swimming or gym, she might like something related to that, or a thermal coffee cup for walks, or something for her pets..give us more clues!

M&S / supermarkets often do Christmas indoor plant arrangements in a basket or similar. I was given one once and loved it, not something I would justify buying myself.

FloralGums · 17/11/2024 20:07

Bulbs in a ceramic pot. They come with a little bag of compost and you plant them. There are lots of nice ones on Next, M&S, Waitrose and garden centres.

You are a fucking icon. I love this.

Corinthiana · 17/11/2024 20:33

My sister is 71. I'm buying her new walking boots because she's going to Macchu Pichu in a few months.
Find out her hobbies.

JustAboutHangingInThere · 17/11/2024 20:35

Hamper with her favourite nibbles.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 17/11/2024 22:20

I'm not far off that age. I'd like sturdy Bluetooth headphones, not ear-buds, to use at the gym with my iPod.

lovemycbf · 17/11/2024 22:23

Next have some lovely cashmere gloves at a decent price?
Neals yard also have lovely gift sets in various scents

okayhescereal · 17/11/2024 22:25

LOVING the answers on this thread!!

Heated throw for when she's back from Macchu Picchu, has kicked off the DM's and just wants to cosy on the sofa a bit enjoying the fave nibble filled hamper?

5foot5 · 17/11/2024 23:34

Loving the answers on this thread in that:
a. Why can't your Dad buy his own sister a present!
b. Being 70 is not an adequate description. She is a person with, presumably, her own interests and hobbies. Just the same as someone of 30,40 or 50.

TheBigSalami · 17/11/2024 23:40

My (husband’s) aunt is 72 and so far we have bought her a By Terry serum and a Diptyque candle. She loves Space NK, so is easy to buy for.

Mebebecat · 17/11/2024 23:41

I'm not far short of 70 and I want a dry robe, an engraving pen and a coverless duvet. Happy to help!

username358 · 17/11/2024 23:45

Do you have a price range? Does she have any hobbies or interests?

ErrolTheDragon · 17/11/2024 23:54

The thing about 'finding out hobbies' though is that unless it involves consumables/items that wear out, then she's likely to have the kit she needs. (Theres a thread on the gardening board at the moment about 'gardening gifts' that would be a waste of money for keen gardeners ).

WinterCrow · 17/11/2024 23:54

Fair play to you, OP, for getting 'lovely scarf' out of the way in your first post.

eggandonion · 18/11/2024 00:03

I want a lamp. And a puppy. And a trip to the panto. I'm not 70...but I won't see 60 again!

I'm almost 50 & my best girlfriend is almost 70. Our birthdays are both around Xmas.

We were thinking of Coldplay tickets but decided not to spend the money.

We'll just go out on the piss instead.

AndyAnderson · 18/11/2024 00:08

My mum is 72. She enjoys gifts of jewellery from Monica Vinader. She also likes posh skincare stuff e.g. Clarins and anything made from cashmere. If Monica Vinader’s too expensive, I’ve seen that D.Louise has a Black Friday sale on

Black Friday Necklaces

Our Black Friday Sale has arrived. Shop up to 60% off our wide range of necklaces, all of which have been uniquely designed in-house and come with our lifetime guarantee to never change colour.

It's just a suggestion. If she plays tennis, enjoys swimming, is into gaming: who knows? Often that gives you a clue for an appropriate gift.
What would you suggest?

ErrolTheDragon · 18/11/2024 07:43

Oh, to be sure having an idea about hobbies and interests can be very helpful, but can require at least as much thought as a 'generic' gift.

borntobequiet · 18/11/2024 07:52

I’m 71. My DD generally gives me tech stuff (e.g. headphones) and my DS a cash contribution to my winter holiday somewhere warm.
My siblings and I don’t do presents, we visit and have a nice meal at some point over the season. If anyone gave me a candle or a scarf I’d regift it immediately.
