A challenging one for suggestions for dad

This is another thread asking for suggestions. For dad this time.

He has stage 4 cancer so is pretty unwell, has lots of pain, struggles to move around much so can’t really go out, has peripheral neuropathy from chemo so can’t feel / use his fingers for precision things. When he’s sitting he’s in good humour. Enjoys baths but may not be able to have them much longer

When he was well, he was sporty (loved rugby mainly), very practical - loved doing DIY (airfix models went down well one year), enjoys cooking curries etc (can still do this with regular breaks), he was a scientist (chemist) by profession. Not a reader apart from newspapers, likes watching YouTube reaction videos now.

I got him an aftershave selection for his birthday which he liked but means that’s not an option now.

Heated blanket.

Audio book subscription??

ShiteRider · 16/11/2024 10:39

He might like the heated blanket actually, his hands are always cold.

He struggles to sleep too so audio book subscription might also be good. I’ll have to get him headphones too I think or he’ll wake mum up.

Thank you x

Turtle doves wrist warmers - keeps dexterity but still warm?

Cashmere socks - my Dad when very unwell found socks uncomfortable so we got ones made for diabetics - seam free etc.

A subscription to Readly? Would he have something to read them on? I use an IPad.

My dad was in a similar position a few years ago and he loved a coffee pod machine and also silky Pjs were much easier for him to be able to get on and off himself.

Does he have a wheelchair? Does he support a certain rugby team? tickets to a match?

All stadiums will have accessible access and wheelchair spaces. Dress him warm, throw blankets on top and take him for a game. There is nothing like the roar of a home crowd for a rugby fan. He doesn't need stuff, he needs moments.

I know you said he’s not a reader but when my dad (who sounds like he had similar interests) was in a similar position with stage 4 cancer I got him a magazine subscription. He loved it, used to read an article at a time and would sometimes take the full month before the next one came but he loved having something he could dip in and out of. Could share interesting bits with his brothers that visited and had something to look forward to. I got him a motorsport one but maybe there’s a rugby or cookery one
