The best gift I ever received were 12 wrapped secondhand books each with a month sticker. A book advent for the following year. And even if I had already read a couple of the titles, it wasn't an issue as they were only a couple of pound each.

That’s a lovely idea @HopefullyHopeless thank you.

I’ll have a look at the link too. Thanks

I agree that the best gift is books! I've been gifted various bookmarks, coasters, pin badges etc and whilst you always appreciate the thought it's just stuff adjacent to what you actually enjoy.

Plenty of etsy shops/bookstores do 'Blind date with a book', you could make your own as previous poster has said, or there are subscription boxes e.g. https://teatimebookshop.co.uk

Thank you. Subscription boxes was something i had in mind. Less boring than a waterstones voucher

Not sure if it would fit his vibe, but I've brought this kind of embossed book strap from Etsy for most book lovers in my life now and they've all been OBSESSED. Lots of different patterns (and good if he's ever dreamed of his own library).

I recommend Mr B's Emporium in Bath and online for a good subscription service.

I'd love a book subscription.

I think you meant recommendations for novels, but what about something like the book lovers bucket list or a little book about books or similar?

anibendod · 11/11/2024 19:04

buying books for readers can be hit and miss, as some people are quite particular about the books that they read, making it hard to choose books on their behalf (especially if you are not a bookworm or interested in similar books yourself).

If you DO want to gift books, a theme might help make it easier to select them, e.g. booker prize nominees, banned books or books that made the BBC Big reads shortlist. www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/top100.shtml

You can get beautiful display copies of certain books, e.g. clothbound penguin classics, if there is a book that you know is special to him.

If he buys paperback books, might he appreciate some quirky bookends to display?

If there is a particular TV series or film that he really likes, perhaps he would appreciate the books that inspired it? If he's of the old school technology persuasion, you could include the accompanying DVD.

Does he have a kindle? If not, might he appreciate one? (Worth doing some digging as many people prefer tree books). If he already has a kindle, does he have a page turner?

Might an audible subscription work so he can listen to books?

If he has a favourite author, is there a day trip you could go on connected to that author?

Just coming on here to second this. A very thoughtful friend bought me a 6 month subscription for my 50th and so far, great. The recipient can fill in a questionnaire so they can taylor choices of books.
