Very boring at ours as DC all do their own thing or go to their in laws. My DH is a taxi driver and this year he will be working 6am till 2pm on xmas day.
. So i will prob get up with him for a cup of tea together. Then potter around and prepare christmas dinner with prosecco( my mam lives 5 mins away so she will come for lunch) . Me & Dh are off to canaries a few days later so we just want a laid back easy day. However xmas eve is our 4 DC & their partners& 6 GDC & i always do a buffet. Luckily i have the day off work( 1st time is 8 yrs) so that will be a lunchtime rather than evening time... phew!!!

its Special all on its own without doing anything.

DCs wake up, whoever is up firsts get the privlage of waking the others. I put on a bra and head down stairs first to put the lights and music on while DCs argue whose turn it is to come down stairs first. I film their reactions when they open the door, DH is filming from behind. They start digging in, no taking turns but over the years they have their own rhythm. I cuddle up on the couch while DH sneaks off for his coffee.

After presents I do a quick clear up, put all gifts in relevant sacks DCs do what they want we have a bit of toast and a brew. About 11.30 we have brunch. DCs set the table with colouring in table clothes, no one needs to get dressed, no one needs to ask permission to eat their Christmas chocolate, it’s all relaxed and no rules.

After everyone has got up which in itself is a huge task and requires quite a lot of shouting upstairs and a large gong! ( kids early 20s )

Breakfast….toast, honey, marmite some boiled eggs
Coffee, mince pies
Baileys ( Aldi alternative actually as it’s cheaper and lovely )

Open presents whilst eating

Breakfast sounds quite normal really but my family aren’t interested in different stuff at breakfast. Except for the baileys of course

yes one of my favourite things about Xmas as a dc was that’s it was completely acceptable to eat choc before breakfast.

Just a putting on a bra, no one else getting dressed- sounds very relaxed!

Oh I love reading about everyone's own traditions. Can I ask though, only one person has mentioned Church. 12'OClock mass is a big thing here. Place is packed and hardly anyone misses it. Is mass/church as Christmas not really a thing or do people do Christmas Eve mass?

It fully depends on the congregation. We have 2 churches in our parish covered by the same priest, he dose an early Christmas Eve mass about 6.30pm for families including carol service at one church then the main Midnight mass at the other church. He also dose 2 Christmas Day masses, one at 9.30am (same as Sunday mass) then one at 11.30am, again same time as the Sunday mass would be at each church.

ive never been to midnight mass, my parents preferred the pub Christmas Eve as did I when younger. Now I can’t stay up that late and neither can my DCs. We did go to Christmas Day mass as kids. I say every year I will go to church Christmas Day but I never do.

@ImAnAutum we go to midnight mass and have mince pies and mulled wine in the church hall after.
Theres always a small present for all the children too.

Ps. When we were younger on the way to church my dad used to pretend he’d left his lighter at home and go back to put Santas presents out. ( of course we didn’t find that out till many years later )
Needless to say it wasn’t long before my brother and I were fed up missing Santa and didn’t want to go to church at midnight 🤣

I'll get up at about 6, put the coffee on walk the dog and bring DH a coffee in bed. Dd will bounce in to our room at about 7.00, open her stocking and then we'll head downstairs at about 8, have some breakfast, open some presents and then go church. After church, we go out for a long walk with the dog.

We have a buffet lunch/afternoon tea, so spend the afternoon opening the rest of the presents, ring family and generally have a very relaxed day. We love our Christmas Day.

Regarding Church - Never go Christmas morning but always go to midnight mass. Our Church is chocker every December, the Christingle service, Carol service, Crib service etc… are very well attended.

Christmas morning this year will be -

I wake up early, tip toe down, switch the tree on/fairy lights on and light the fire. Have a coffee in peace and put the Christmas music channel on.

I have 3 DC. One is a teen, the other 2 are young. They tend to get up between 7:30am and 8:30am.

We do the whole “Santa’s been” and It’s magical watching them and their excitement.

Breakfast is fancy pastries, different boxes of chocolates, coffee and buck’s fizz. The young kids will have mocktails.

Christmas music is always playing in the kitchen, and the Snowman will be on in the living room.

Lots of Whatsapping to family and friends and then it’s time to get dressed up as we’ll be waited on hand and foot at our local gastropub for Christmas lunch. Lots of fizz as we’ll walk the 10 min stroll to the pub.

Home by 3pm, PJ’s on, champagne out, grazing on fancy picky bits early evening as well as cheese & crackers and some indulgent dessert. Then it’s board games followed by Gavin & Stacey!

Im a lapsed Catholic, but since my DCs started school I attend mass quite regularly through school services. I’ve become to love going to various services throughout December, whether my DCs are involved or not. One is held at a United reform church but the service is held by various priests and pastors from different religions. There is always a big brass band it’s fantastic even if you’re not religious it’s a great carol service with lots of cheer and a couple of the local school choirs attend.
