As title really , this year I've found myself with a good few health practitioners and I wondered if you tip or offer a small box of chocks etc or perhaps you don't give anything , what's normal these days .
I have dog groomer
hairdresser
physio
chiropodist
dog walker .

Likely to be an unpopular opinion

Honestly, nothing. They get paid to do their job, and we are in a cost-of-living crisis. I work and don't get tips at Christmas for doing the job I'm paid to do. Modern etiquette is different from the days of tipping the 'service industry'. Hospitality, yes, those you mention, no

I agree, nothing for any of them! It's not necessary.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/11/2024 22:36

I’d give the dog walker a box of chocolates. No idea why! Would just feel appropriate.

I don't tip people at Christmas for doing their jobs. Well I mean obviously I still would in a restaurant but I'm not the type that will leave a tin of biscuits out for the postman or a box of celebrations for the bin men. They get paid to do a job.

Most people aren't even allowed to accept stuff and even when they do it goes in the bin. Sad but true.

OP in your case I might make an exception for the dog walker (a nice bottle of wine or some chocs maybe) but the rest just get some cards. With the physio and chiropodist I'd probably be more inclined to get them thank you cards once your treatment is over rather than x-mas cards.

I tip my cleaner as she’s fucking marvellous and they need a bit extra

I will tip my hairdresser on each visit and at Xmas will add £5 extra to their tip. My household will put in £5 each for the refuse collection team and give that to them on their last round before Xmas.

I tip the bin men. Honestly they do remember which houses tip and are a bit more forgiving with the odd extra black bag. I used to work in environmental services for the LA and generally the average bin man can be bought off for a packet of biscuits.

I bought some nice beers for the bin men last year, but have found them quite unforgiving of any wrong things in recycling etc so don’t think I’d bother again!

Bookaholic73 · 18/12/2024 18:49

I tip my PT and nail tech.

Chocolates and wine for the nail tech.
One hours extra pay for the PT.

If your Podiatrist/Chiropodist is NHS then a "Thank You" card and a quick letter or email to their head office (as it all goes to our Appraisal) and costs you nothing ....and better for our health too 😆

Recycling is tricky though if it’s contaminated then the load will go to general waste instead. I know my council had to pay multiple £50k fines for contaminated recycling last year.

I used to give the postie £10 but he got moved and now our post is randomly delivered a few days a week by whoever . Our bin men , for all the bins , are an utter nuisance so they aren’t getting anything .

GrandHighPoohbah · 19/12/2024 02:52

I usually give a box of chocolates to people I have face to face personal interaction with, eg cleaner or son's tutor, but not to those I don't know personally eg bin men or postman.

Speedweed · 19/12/2024 03:03

I used to give the postman some biscuits, but the post has become erratic and it's not always the same one, so I didn't this year.

I do give the binmen a big box of posh biscuits, as their service is great and I find they are happy to take the three steps down the drive to get my bin if I for get to put it out.

I also give my cleaner a cash tip.
