I'm at a loss at what to get them, they are in their 80's and well off so don't 'need' anything and just buy whatever they want.
Budget around £40
Please help!

I mentioned this on another thread. For my MIL who’s also in her 80s I’ve bought her a lovely box and filled it with lots of birthday cards and stamps to go with them.

Colinorpercy · 03/11/2024 23:47

I’d probably go for something useable - voucher for afternoon tea/restaurant, bottle of nice wine/brandy/whisky/whatever they like to drink, tickets for something: local play/show

I am only a few years off 80. I would hate if somebody ‘took over’ my card buying.

Maybe you could suggest something you would like and help the OP then?

Lytlethings · 03/11/2024 23:55

Quite difficult as I love things like Baileys,Ameretto biscuits, licorice all sorts, Nougat, marzipan, anything from Arran sense of Scotland. I am not certain that my choices would help the op.

If i am perfectly honest, what would make me really happy is not to receive any gifts at all. I know it would deeply upset my family if i said so.

My MIL is mid-80s and gets very stressed about leaving her house. However she makes sure to send cards to everyone. I’ve bought the cards from her usual shop.

Big Bouquet of flowers for the house? (especially if they would prefer nothing, as very low impact, no need to care for them)
Something for a hobby like a book or wool or whatever
Really fancy wool socks or other thing that they wouldn’t go big on
Thing that needs replaced but they are blind to (is their kettle 20 years old and really slow or a toaster or similar item)
a 3 month magazine subscription or cheese subscription or similar that will be not that long

missslinkyagain · 04/11/2024 01:53

Lots of people going for the consumables, although I like the socks idea, perhaps some luxury ones, maybe merino wool for warmth.

I know most people don't want nicnaks, and over the years I have done all the obvious things.

The cards is a great idea, not for them but maybe my mum who is also in her 80's but less well off and can't easily get out.

Grrr! Surely this is their son’s problem? Grrr, again.

Bird and blend tea subscription. My gran used to love "posh" teas but it wouldn't have occurred to her to buy it herself.

My dad's heading for 80 and I've bought him a vintage bird book.
