I know I don’t have to get something big, but I’m wondering if there’s something I haven’t thought about yet which would be useful for the coming year which I could use as a Christmas present?

What do you five year olds like in general?

What sort of things do they like? Dd has a trampoline which gets used all year round. Also a scooter/bike can be useful. All of her Barbie things get played with regularly - plane/house etc. If they are into animals maybe the Guinea Pig or rabbit Mama surprise. Maybe one of the larger lego sets, or scalectrix if that's more what they're interested in.

Bike, scooter, skateboard

Dolls buggy and stuff

Remote control car

I think DD was 4 or 5 when she got her Yoto, they are ace and she loves it, was definitely her favourite present the year she got it and is still being used now and she's 9 soon.

I used to keep outdoor toys for Easter because quite frankly I don't want to be out supervising a trampoline session or teaching DD to ride a bike in Jan/Feb.

Children don't care about the price of things - but more the size of things. One of those big cardboard colour in castles / houses / pirate ships and a load of arts and crafts supplies inside.

Bike will be ours.
Yoto player was our plan B!

I agree on the trampoline, luckily ours lives in our garage so we don't have to stand in the cold and rain!

You give kids presents at Easter???

mummyof2boys30 · 03/11/2024 17:22

We got x2 liferyder scooters for both sons when about 8 or 9. My neice loved it so got one for 5th birthday. Handle has x3 heights and can also replace heavy duty stickers to change design as they grow. Mine are now 14 and 12 and sometimes still use them to go to shop lol

@BlackOrangeFrog

Yes, not necessarily given at Easter for celebrating Easter sake but because I was off work and had time to put things together as the weather improved.

I spread presents evenly throughout the year to suit the season and when they would be used. I prefer to give stuff in a bundle at a specific time so as not a constant drip, drip drip of stuff.

DDs birthday was September stock up on arts and crafts things for the autumn,
3 months after that Christmas various bits.
3 months after that Easter so outdoor / garden things over the years that included trampoline, big wooden climbing frame, scooter, bike, shed set up as a play space.
3 months after that July / school holidays refresh of beach stuff so new wetsuit, buckets and spades, crabbing stuff if needed.

My now 6 year old loved those massive Imaginext play sets last year. He got 4 last year between xmas and birthday. He pretends they are 'uncool' and 'babyish' now when talking to people but then still spends hours playing with them alone in his bedroom every night lol.

watchingsmurfs · 03/11/2024 19:24

Playmobil? So many great sets - the rocket/space shuttle, hospital, caravan, crane etc. Has been a ‘main’ gift for many a Christmas or bday in this house and always a hit.

NatalieH2220 · 03/11/2024 19:26

Hot wheels garage, they have various sizes

dreamcatchlavender · 03/11/2024 19:27

Yoto player was a winner here. Nice new routine at bedtime as well. It's also great as others can buy stories/cards as gifts if they'd like to.
