Present ideas for older horsey/ outdoorsy friend

Mittens67 · 02/11/2024 10:24

I am really struggling to think what to buy my good friend for Christmas.
She is in her early 70s, has five horses, chickens, a dog and three cats.
Her birthday is in January so I have double the gifts to think of.
She is a thrifty and very practical sort of person who never spends anything on herself and can’t think of anything when asked.
Not interested in gardening, reading, pampurring, fashion, cooking.
Budget is about £100 total for each occasion. Could be several smaller things or one big one.
Any ideas please?

She must have things she enjoys other than the horses. I have horses and I wouldn't appreciate a horsey gift from someone who knows nothing about them.

I'd like Warm clothes - gloves etc
A heated gilet
A heated throw
A coffee machine
Socks
Merino base layers
An Equidry if she doesn't have one

DisplayPurposesOnly · 02/11/2024 10:34

Practical gifts sound like the way to go, as PP says. That's a good list.

Travel mug for brews outdoors
Waterproof socks (Sealskinz)
Windproof gloves

Badburyrings · 02/11/2024 10:37

Second the sealskinz, was exactly what I was going to suggest. Also something like an equidry or Equicoat.

When dd had a horse I got things like saddle cleaner, hoof picks, horse rugs because her horse used to lose them daily in the field and got her jodphurs, hats etc for xmas

Please don't do this.

I'd only spend 50 or 70 quid at Christmas :

Lupine and Petzel head torches
Bobble hat with head torch in it
Welly socks

And give her the rest of the money in a voucher for equestrian shop eg
www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk/%3Fsrsltid%3DAfmBOoq3RURo4hKXeeseZuZbg15V3CXKBu9LH90F1kn9eEBKdFPcP4oy&ved=2ahUKEwiSnbjKvb2JAxV5UqQEHYQ7LlQQFnoECEIQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1hVYkwgn5y471tJ2BonXDH

for January

There is much to buy as an equestrian, and it's all quite specialist, and 120 pounds would go a long way to buying something useful like go towards new clippers or yard boots.

Christwosheds · 02/11/2024 11:06

I don’t have horses, but for outdoorsy things good boots ? Eg something like Muck boots for general dog walks, dealing with the horses . I have long muck boots and they are really warm and comfortable. I also have short Tretorn boots for walks. Both boots have neoprene and are easy to wash , waterproof rubber but actually warm.
Other than that really good thermal base layers eg wool. Bella Di Notte do great wool vests and long sleeved vests in lovely colours, but most importantly they keep you warm and last a long time.

BrakesOn · 02/11/2024 11:14

I agree with the genuine Muck Boots. I got my mother who sounds not dissimilar, the fur-lined short boots for her birthday and she's hardly taken them off. She can just slip them on and off and she loves them.

Willyoubereadybyteatime · 02/11/2024 11:23

I agree boots would be great but I suggested a voucher because the fit has to be right. They need trying on. This friend might want a larger size than normal to wear extra socks underneath and personally, as a horsey middle aged woman, I wouldn't want anyone choosing boots for me because I am on my feet so much they are a very important purchase made every five years or so. And my feet are wide.

Rydale is a great shop. I'd be ecstatic with a gift voucher from there!

Floralnomad · 02/11/2024 11:28

Cashmere hat or gloves
decent welly socks
handcream ( even horsey people use it )

DirlingWhervish · 02/11/2024 11:32

What a lovely friend you are!

katmunchkin · 02/11/2024 11:35

A carriage driving experience?

I am a horsey person myself. She doesn’t ride anymore and finds the daily looking after harder and harder.
Not heard of a heated gilet, will google that.

Sealskinz are a good idea.
I have bought her boots previously.
Been down the voucher route over the years with a variety of places but not tried rydale vouchers so good thought.

What a lovely friend you are!

She has been a great friend to me over many years. I only wish I could be of more help to her in looking after her horses but increasing disability means I am not of any practical use.

Cashmere fingerless gloves - made from recycled cashmere jumpers. They are lovely.

ElleneAsanto · 02/11/2024 15:02

Possum fur insoles…best outdoorsy present I ever got.

The best Xmas present I (horsey person) got off my (also horsey) friend was a framed photo of my horse. Even more precious now since she went over Rainbow Bridge. Sometimes monetary gifts aren’t necessary.
How about vouchers for a photo shoot for her with her horse?

Barleysugar86 · 02/11/2024 16:22

You can get some lovely already filled plant pots for outdoors- she wouldn't necessarily have to be into gardening to enjoy them- or you could plant a plant into a pot for her and give the gift like that.

I love the plant pots that look like a pair of welly boots for brightening up a doorway.

MakingPlans2025 · 02/11/2024 17:35

Good travel mug and some high quality sachets of coffee and hot chocolate.
Don't try to buy horsey stuff if you don't know much about it.

Mumofyellows · 02/11/2024 17:40

Horse and dog person here...defo the warm clothing ideas, equidry type coat is a game changer if she doesn't have one (I have a Stable Skin, cheaper and absolutely brilliant at the yard and walking the dogs).
Decent wellies are always welcome, or sturdy walking type boots like Ariats.
I always love nice framed prints of my animals, or a portrait drawn of them?

Mittens67 · 02/11/2024 19:14

Photos and portraits are good ideas but last year I had drawings done of two of her horses by faye hobson illustrations (She is on facebook and does really good humorous custom pony portraits if anyone is looking)
