Reusable advent calendar worth it for kids?

I can’t decide whether a reusable advent calendar is a good idea for my two boys (7m & 2.5yrs) or if it would be totally wasted on them.
I love the look of the JoJo’s nativity one, but would they just get bored of it immediately, or outgrow it super young? I have a gift card to use, so it would effectively be free, but maybe I should spend it on toys instead.
As they get older I would pop a chocolate in for them too alongside the toy, so they wouldn’t be missing out on that.

Great idea, I still have my old fabric one from childhood, I had it all the way through being a toddler to a teen, I have such good memories from it, my gran used to put sweets or chocolate in and when I was older sometimes a little riddle and I’d have to solve it to go find some small gift like stationary or what not. I look back on it with such fond memories.

My boys are now 16 and 19 and the Advent Truck (wooden, complete with Father Christmas as driver) is still an integral part of Christmas for them. We have tiny wooden decorations (angels, bells etc) for each drawer and I squeeze in 2 chocolates in each as well. We've had it for probably 15 years and I think there would be uproar if I didn't do it!

@BathTangle oh a truck sounds way more up my eldest’s street! Maybe I need to just splurge and get one from somewhere else

We had a fabric one that didn’t get used really - the little pockets were square and difficult to
know what to put in . Easier to just buy one per child - not eco friendly though . Make sure the pockets are a useful size

I have a reusable one bought when my 19 year old son was born. The pockets are tiny but i put in chocolate, lego figures, slip with a Christmas activity etc on it when he was younger. Nowadays, it's chocolate, guitar picks, keyring, a £5/10, lottery ticket and anything else tiny i can think of.Anything larger like the yearly new bauble, bag of chocolate etc is wrapped under the tree and the slip in his advent calender directs him there
He loves it and it's an integral part of our advent. When he was younger, I would add a 'Christmas Spirit' activity like smile at a Stranger, help somebody at school today and so on. I still put the odd one in now but he's a really kind, thoughtful person anyway.

We've got a wooden advent house bought many years ago from John Lewis. The children would really miss it if it stayed in the loft one year and always go for their chocolates if they're home! Dcs will be 20,28, 29 and 31 this Christmas and don't live at home (apart from youngest who's away at university). It's a real family tradition now.

My ds had a wooden train.

My mum use to put shiney coins in it as he got older. Anything from 2p to 50p and then Xmas eve would be a shiney £1!

We bought a Play Mobile one when the kids were young and used it for about 10-12 years in all - it became a Christmas tradition and was a rediscovery every year as we could never remember what was in each box.

We have a fabric one (it's nearly 20 years old) I originally bought it because dc1 has allergies and in those days it was impossible to get a suitable advent calendar. My youngest is 15 and I asked yesterday if they still wanted to do it and it was a definite yes. I just buy chocolate coins these days but have done differentChristmaschocolatesover the years. Was also good for when my dns stayed when little as I'd just add an extra one for the days they were there. Dc3 has always enjoyed filling the advent calendar too.

Just make sure the pockets/drawers are big about to put things in. We have a JL one and you can only fit small chocolates and erasers in it so not much fun.

PaminaMozart · 31/10/2024 14:57

I bought a plain wooden one (with drawers) from Works - cost only £15 I think. I painted it red and green and stuck on some shells we'd collected on a beach.

*enough. Can't edit on app.

We have a wooden tree shaped one that's about 20 years old .... we've put everything into the little drawers, from Lego over chocolates to little riddle & treasure hunt hints (last one was a big hit for the teens!)
And as others have said, it would not be Christmas without it!
So go for it!

Wafflesandcheese · 31/10/2024 15:03

Still use our wooden calendar for a 15yo and 12yo - was a good investment. We keep it basic and put in a chocolate for each, and a small wooden decoration for the tree (same ones each year). They still love it, and like a previous poster, there would be uproar if it didn't come out on 1 Dec!

frostywhite · 31/10/2024 15:27

We have wooden ones - a Christmas train and a little snowy house, the kids who are much older now still love it when they come out for December. Good extra Christmas decorations too!
