What time do you wake up??

Not my first Christmas thread this year 😂 I'm just already so bloody excited!

Anyway to the point... my partner and I were chatting the other day as he was saying when he and his sister were young, their parents wouldn't get up until 8am on Christmas morning, and of course I think this is preposterous! At the grand old age of 38 I'm already planning to be up by 6am just like I am every year! So please settle who is right, I'm convinced I am, but as adults what do you deem an appropriate time to wake up on Christmas morning??

What time do you go to bed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day OP? We are very much a late-night family!!

Pre-children on Christmas Eve we would go out for a walk in one of the big parks, or matinee ballet, then see the Christmas lights in the West End, have a few drinks in a cosy pub, then home to champagne and canapés. We still do this now, but with an early evening meal out to appease the toddler. We won’t go to bed until at least 0100 and we open a present at midnight.

Christmas Day is always a lie in - we don’t get that treat most other days! We would have coffee in bed, open a couple of presents, then a walk along the canal, pop into the pub, then home for more presents, silly games, seafood platter, then main meal around 1900. Singing/playing, more games, cocktails, cheese around midnight, bed in the early hours. It’s similar with children, still the walk and pub, dinner slightly earlier, and they go to bed a bit later than usual. Wake up would be around 0800 now (although last year we were very lucky with 0900!).

My 2 were overexcited horrors when they were young.
There worst ever was 3am - we actually laugh about it now they're adults and they blame me for making everything 'too exciting' to sleep 😂
Generally it was always between 4-5.30am until they were both over 10 yrs and I actually don't regret it, they were the best times!!

MaltipooMama · 30/10/2024 14:51

@Harvestmoon49 awwwww what lovely memories for your children with you making it too exciting to sleep! I hope my boy says the same about me when he's an adult! I want to make the most of it for as long as possible 😀

There is never an acceptable reason for getting up at 6am. That's practically the middle of the night!

MaltipooMama · 30/10/2024 14:57

@Grepes oh your Christmas Eve and day sounds so lovely! We'd go to bed typically between around 12-1am, we did the same last Christmas and our son was only three weeks old at the time, I think we were running on adrenaline!

We are normally up at 7am but I deem anything after 6am acceptable. DDs are young but fortunately we've never had the 4/5am wake ups.

I totally get the excitement around Christmas and I like to make the day last as long as possible. So normally up around 7am, DDs open their stockings and we get breakfast (and Bucks Fizz for DH and I) then start main present opening around 8am. It's normally done and wrapping paper cleared up by 9ish so DDs can play with their toys, I can start cooking and DH can tidy up a bit, set the table and play with DDs.

We tend to have our Christmas Dinner around 1pm, a walk afterwards and then watch some TV/have a snooze on the sofa mid afternoon. I don't normally nap in the day but always stay up til after midnight to see Christmas Day out so a post lunch snooze is a proper treat.

Then the evening is drinks, games, cheeseboard etc and staying up late. Friends may pop over for a drink in the evening or sometimes it's just the four of us. I just love the whole day.

Boxing Day is for lie ins and a full English breakfast (with pigs in blankets!)

I used to get up at 5am for work 🙈 used to be out the house for 6am as I had a 45 minute commute and the working day started at 7am! I think I always consider 6am to be the official start of the morning!

@GameOfJones that sounds like my kind of Christmas!! Very similar to what we're planning as well, nice busy day with some resting periods thrown in!

Eee definitely not just you OP, when we were kids we were known to be up by 5am🤣 even as an adult I’ve always been a 6am Christmas Day person and my husband does the same! Although this year we’ll have an 8 month old baby and if she keeps her current schedule up then we’ll be starting the day at 4:45😂

Whichone2024 · 30/10/2024 15:54

I’m an early riser and DH and is opposite. This kids have his sleeping habits lol. (So I enjoy a very peaceful cup of tea, or several, and read a book).

Allofthelightsss · 30/10/2024 16:04

My kids are in their teens now, but I’ll definitely be wide awake earlier than 6am! I’ll start flushing toilets and banging doors around 7am if they’re not up..

I have always woken up before them, I absolutely love Christmas!

Older than you, but same. Our whole family (my parents, DP, his parents, and our children) will be up at 6am for our 06:30 dog walk. We do it every year and then come home, drink our weight in coffee shower, have breakfast (French Toast) and then open presents.

Wouldn't have it any other way! Maybe it'll change when my kids grow up (eldest is 10) but right now it's lovely spending 15+hrs together as just a family. Last year we even managed no arguments 😱

JustAnonymous · 30/10/2024 16:08

Just me and Ds (18) at home. This year, we're going to family for dinner, so we'll probably get up about 9ish (well, I will - Ds will surface as late as possible!), but on the years I'm doing dinner, I'm up at about 6am getting everything ready.

Openmouthinsertfood · 30/10/2024 16:38

Usually around 10am. Adult and no children. Those that get up at the crack of dawn, don't you find you are tired later on in the day?

Not really, although I am ready to collapse in front of the TV with some chocolate and a glass of something nice by 8pm!

MotherofDogs3 · 30/10/2024 17:02

My daughter is 13 months at Christmas and we will be in a hotel as spending Christmas at my mums this year and will be heading to her house for 7am! She's up at 6am most mornings but even before we had her my husband would have us up at the same time 🤣 We both love Christmas and can't wait for our daughter to be old enough to understand it all but we will pretend she does this year 😉 When I was a kid me and my sister would have our parents up way before 7am!!!

babasaclover · 30/10/2024 17:28

We get up as soon as 8 year old daughter does, she always wakes up same time as usual.

Honestly for those that have children that wake up earlier I've always wondered how their brain knows to wake them up?

babasaclover · 30/10/2024 17:29

ProvincialLady24 · 29/10/2024 21:49

My DC have never woken up before 7.30 on Christmas morning. We don't go downstairs until 8. I'm very lucky never to have had 4am starts.

Same like how would they wake up earlier if naturally?

MrsPostmanPat · 30/10/2024 17:41

I'll be up around 7 with DP and 13yo DC. We'll do presents then I'll head to Park Run for 9!

YellowphantGrey · 30/10/2024 18:00

As a baby DS woke for a feed at 5am, then always woke up at that time and this last till he was about 12? Now he's up at 630am without fail every morning, including weekends.

Last year, we all woke about 930am Christmas Day but only because we didn't go to bed till about 330am after Midnight Mass.

DS is 16. Could very well be the same this year, depending on what time we choose to come home from Mass

TheWorstWeek · 30/10/2024 19:49

DC (6&8) are early risers at the best of times but they've always managed to just get up their usual sort of time of 6-6.30am on Christmas. I'm not sure we'll get a very restful sleep on Christmas eve this year though. When we went to Disneyland recently DS was awake every hour and then couldn't get back to sleep after 3am - we were getting up at 4am for our flight!

As kids my parents let us open our stockings from Santa in our bedrooms without them so from like 4.30 only if we went back to sleep for a little while or didn't wake them until at least 7/8! Anything to get a little extra sleep.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 01/11/2024 14:26

We usually get up between 7am and 8am. My teens are not early risers, but the youngest two are still always excited and can't hold it in. But we instilled a "not before 7am" rule a few years back because we did get the odd 3am year when really little.

We also don't stay up late xmas day, I'm usually shattered by 9pm 😆. Even though xmas day is my favourite day of the year.
