Anyone just not doing Christmas?

Just wondering if anyone else without young kids, or family visiting on ‘the day’, just not doing it. We’ll visit one adult daughter’s family on Boxing Day, taking and receiving gifts. My other adult daughter will be visiting from many miles away with young grandchildren a day or so after that (again there will be gifts). Aside from that, we’ve deciding we won’t be putting up a tree, or eating a traditional Christmas dinner. I looked at a pretty Christmas candle in M&S today. I like to light candles around the house in winter, but I decided not to buy it to avoid unnecessarily feeding the Christmas corporate monster! Both DH and me get irritated by how successful big corporations are at convincing people to part with money on tat for any occasion they can create - grandparents day anyone?

Bah humbug!

But surely if you are old enough to have adult children you already have decorations you have had for years?
DH and I bought our Christmas tree 37 years ago and still put it up despite the fact that it doesn’t stand straight.
I mentioned to my adult children that I might buy a new one in the sales and they were aghast, the wonky threadbare tree is part of the charm as far as they are concerned.
Also think if corporations weren’t producing this tat would lots of people lose their jobs?

I’m concerned the ops husband is driving this, as the tone seems more sad than anti Christmas. She wanted the candle. Likely Has the tree as you say. Is exchanging gifts with family. Maybe money is at play, lack of it, but getting “angry” at companies is a bit odd. People who have the means have went all out for Christmas since it was celebrated. The advent of tv didn’t change that.

I do feel really bah humbug this year too

Not sure why

I usually love Christmas

It's only October, no one should be feeling Christmassy yet.

I'd love to not do Christmas! We have adult dc who always come here and it's lovely but hard work - a constant round of cooking/washing/clearing up.

One day if the dc are both away/doing their own thing, we will book a few days away walking by the coast and our only nod to Christmas will be some wine and cheese.

What?!? Is that you Scrooge? I'm not 'feeding the corporate monster' as I reuse my Christmas decorations (other than the tree, and can hardly call the woman who runs a wreath making workshop as a monster). You don't have to spend money to make things look festive - surely you have stuff from previous years! Even when single and away from family on my own I put a tree up.
But hey each to their own. Hope you have a nice break.

We'll be doing it even though there's probably only going to be three of us. We'll have DD and her family over sometime for Christmas lunch on the day we'll do something special for lunch and dinner .

I understand that people who are unwell or grieving, might not want to 'do' Christmas. But this just seems a bit miserable. Buy the candle OP! Get the fairy lights out!
Don't deny yourself the things which would genuinely bring you enjoyment.

Just DH and I, no family at all and no interest whatsoever in all the Christmas tradition/glitter/party bruhaha. The novelty has worn right off of the 'traditions' and the overconsumption of everything give me the shivvers.

On the day we have a gorgeous breakfast then go out onto the moor with a big picnic and flasks of hots soup and tea. We watch the birds and wildlife and walk for miles. There is never anyone about as everyone's home Doing Christmas. . As it gets dark we come home, light the fire, cwtch up, have a big bowlful of home made lasagne, open a bottle of something nice and watch non Christmassy nonsense on telly.

Just perfect for us.

I'd rather not do it at all this year as mother died in April and its been a shit year. We have always spent Christmas day with her. Just all feels a bit pointless
Dcs are adults.

I never really "do" Christmas. Buy presents for husband and a few friends. Send a few cards. Only Xmas food is one box of mince pies. And I enjoy the Christmas Eve Carol's from Kings.
But that's it. No tree, decorations, turkey, Xmas jumpers etc etc. They are all things I either dislike or consider unnecessary. I have a few days off work, read some books and start planning all the fun things I'm going to do in the next year. Perfect.

I have been doing this for decades. Go for it.
