Things to put in homemade advent calendar for 14 yo dd

We have agreed I will make her one on basis the shop bought ones are so expensive. (Talk about rod for own back!) I am happy to do this but v keen it does not end up more expensive than a shop one so no more than a couple of quid per gift, but some could be more while others less, so for example I could do a Lovisa earring shop and get the four pairs for a tenner or whatever it is and then some days just have a posh chocolate. Also need to make sure it is quite girly so her brothers no jealous of it as they are gettig shop bought ones.

Any suggestions at all on what to put in it please!

Mini nail varnishes are great, we used those in DDs advent calendar last year, they sell packs of 6 for about £3 in primark so works out really cost effective.

Boba tea kit
Keychain with favourite character
Phone charm
The pop ring things they stick on phone cases

Nowadays we just do a chocolate coin or cheap tub choc in each pocket.

We used to do
a trinket every 4 days,
a choc every 4 days,
a written treat (movie night, hot choc, you choose dinner) every 4 days and
a forfeit (clear up plates whilst singing we wish you a merry Christmas, fold laundry with one hand etc) on the other 4.

Was fun... and they seemed to like the forfeits best !

I am doing this for DD2 also 14, so far I have;
Mini candles
Christmas socks
Lip Balm
Pimple patches
Christmas cookie cutters
Tree decoration
A mini felting kit
Croc charms
Christmas phone cases
Earrings

I used to do this for my DD ( and yes it is tricky !)

Most suggestions I'd think of are already up there .

Mine liked a Burts Bees scrub+balm ( two pots that twisted together )

And our tradition is she always gets a hand/foot mask set , those plastic gloves and socks that are filled with moisturiser and you tape them in place .
If you're in the queue in Superdrug or TKMaxx they always have interesting things at the checkout Grin

eBay has samples of perfumes for a couple of pounds which is a nice way to try them out .

I really like the trinket / treat / choc / forfeit idea!

I watched my SiL walk around the various make up concessions in John Lewis asking for samples for her teenage daughter so that see could which brands suited her. She got loads of advent calendar sized samples of makeup and perfume for free.
Worth trying, I guess!

thaegumathteth · 27/10/2024 15:29

I used to like doing this but never kept it in budget tbh

Socks
Lip balm
Christmas glass
Hot chocolate spoon / bomb
Nail files
Body glitter
Mini succulent from likes of b&m
Hair clips
Claw clip

mitogoshigg · 27/10/2024 15:44

You could split a socks multi pack into 3, travel sized toiletries are good too

reluctantbrit · 27/10/2024 19:00

Tried it once, it‘s difficult to keep it cheap.

Cute things were:

Pack of 3 pairs of Christmas socks (can be used again and again the following years), one pair every 5 days or so
Earring or ring sets you break up for several days
Some days just a nice individual wrapped chocolate
face mask
key ring
small tea light candle
Christmas tree ornament (DD has her own tree in her room)
small notes to do something on the day, movie night with treats you don‘t buy normally, baking, going to a nice cafe just the two of you to test Christmas hot chocolates

WWGD · 27/10/2024 21:24

Oh I should do that @DelphiniumBlue i don’t know whether I have the guts though…

50p, £1 or £2 coins.
Lottery ticket.

GettingStuffed · 28/10/2024 11:42

Go for a trip to Poundland, sometimes you see stuff you've never thought of.

My adult DS would be delighted to find £2 coins in his advent calendar , he keeps a stash of them like Gollum < my precious >

Saz12 · 28/10/2024 21:09

@beyondmywits, I love the forfeit idea!! I'm going to steal it this year.
