How to make lounge ultra-Christmassy

We have a tree, a garland on the mantlepiece and a few 'stand it on the sideboard' type ornaments, but it never feels overly Christmassy. It always just feels like my normal living room but with a tree in. Maybe my expectations are too high but how else can I make it more festive? Fairy lights? More greenery? There are no nooks and crannies to decorate - it's a very 1970s rectangular room.

I have no room for a Christmas tree. My living room is small. Dh doesn't celebrate Christmas either so I just keep it low key and simple...almost cosy Christmas. As my lounge is small, now DS is also not bothered about Christmas the big tree doesn't go up. But I do like to create Christmas vibes in the living area.
There is so much you can do with adding lights, I've got a couple of house tealignt holders, I put a garland on the fire place and a snow globe. I'm going to get a new throw too for the sofa. I've got a wooden light up tree but its wonky and then I put fairy lights wherever I can. I got some coloured ones last year and they were lovely! Can't beat a nice Christmas candle either I've got a lantern that I can put a candle in.

@TrickyD I've never cleaned mine

Nor me and I have no intention of doing so. But we must be prepared for the clean-freaks of Mumsnet to tell us we are despicable sluts.

Decorative use only, of course!

HappyDane · 22/10/2024 13:29

White brush would make a great Santa beard!

Flustration · 22/10/2024 14:03

Don't tempt me

HappyDane · 22/10/2024 14:18

😁😁

I bought some Christmas cushion covers to use this year. Pretty cheap on Amazon. I could also get a Christmas throw for the sofas if you have room to store stuff the rest of the year.

Thefirstdance · 22/10/2024 14:33

@OuiOuiMonAmi we always put fairy lights up on the lounge, dining room and hall ceilings as well as on the tree. Last year we hung baubles from the ceiling in between the lights. If you have strong thumbs for all the drawing pins you’ll have to push in, it looks nice.

Fraaahnces · 22/10/2024 14:40

IKEA does christmas decor well

Decorative use only, of course!

It would be a heck of a lot easier to put fairy lights on the toilet brush than to hang them from the ceiling. And equally festive.

I rather fancied trying this, but was put off immediately when I got to the bit that tells you to start by cleaning the ceiling.
I was also puzzled by the reference to ‘Popcorn Ceilings’. Is this US-speak for Artex?

You just have to clean the tiny bit where you stick the command hook to make sure it adheres properly 😂

I agree with PPs that atmospheric lighting (and an open fire if you have one) is the real key, along with Christmassy scents (whether that is natural foliage or candles and oils). Hanging things from the ceiling also takes things up a level. Lots of Christmassy flower arrangements or plants also makes it feel special.

Live in a tiny flat so no room for a tree
I have a driftwood wreath I string lights around
Red throws on chairs
Woodwick candles
Light up tree ornament
Snow globes( still love them!)
Basically create a warm and cosy room
When DC were young I used spray snow on windows, paper chains and made snowflakes with them
You could gather pine cones, scented with oils and display
Led candles are nice too

I’ve bought this, can’t wait to use it

I'm in a new build which is hard to make feel cosy. But I've got cushion covers, lots of fairy lights, and christmas candles to burn.

I want christmassy blankets but we're pretty attached to our electric ones, which are blue!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/10/2024 16:39

Agree with the posters saying it's about the lighting. Tree lights, fairy lights, candles. And also - what colour scheme is your living room? If it's cool colours like grey or blue, you need some red fleecy throws.

Flustration · 22/10/2024 19:32

Oh wow. Just wow.

(But why is it actually kind of cute)

OuiOuiMonAmi · 22/10/2024 20:07

Wow, so many awesome ideas here - thanks so much, everyone!

@TrickyD I find cleaner freaks also don't open windows or ventilate and Happily share saliva with others in terms of eating off each other forks and sharing drinks etc.
Ie mainline germs and holding germs in rooms.

I love the idea of a driftwood wreath with fairy lights. Might have to try that.

Dimmer switch & lots of lighting

I've been seeing people online hang the lights on the ceiling using command hooks, it looks like it really brightens up the space and looks nicely festive. If I've got the patience I think I might try it!

I do this! It's just a single strand of white lights I hang around the edge of the room. I have the ones that can be static or twinkle. The command hooks stay there so will get used again this Christmas.
