I'm going to a wedding in a few weeks and have bought this dress which I love!. I'm a size 16-18 but the dress shows off my waist and makes me look slimmer. I normally hide in jersey dresses and leggings as I feel comfortable so not used to dressing up. I'm in my mid 40s.

I'll have a black slip under as it shows too much cleavage but I'm trying to figure out what to wear over the top as it will be cold.

I'd been thinking a navy jacket but the colour is all wrong so I was wondering about picking out a colour from the dress but can't figure out which one.

Also, the jackets I was looking at hide my waist which actually looks good in the dress, plus I don't want to squash the sleeves.

If anyone has ideas that are in the £40 or less bracket I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe a cape? I know this is over budget, but perhaps something of this style?

Do you want something for dinner/ church service/ going around in between?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/10/2024 01:27

Hard to tell from the pictures but is the background navy ?
If so then a navy jacket would be nice and you;d get more use from it than going for something in one of the other colours ,

Let the dress be the star .

Are you planning on keeping the cover-up on all day ?
I couldn't wear a cape or a big scarf /pashmina all day , it'd get in the way

Where is the wedding being held? If it's in an all in a hotel you won't need a jacket. If it's in a church first then a soft wool poncho might look lovely. I've seen a few in the shops recently.

Sleeveless knit? Monsoon had some last time I was in.

Thanks all. It is in a converted barn but I think there will be photos outside if it's dry. I'm also mindful that it's quite a floaty dress so might not be warm enough inside (at least until the wine and dancing)

I thought it had navy on the background it but when I put a navy jacket next to it it turns out it isn't navy at all.

I might explore poncho / pashminas.

I’d go to EBay or vented.

lots of ponchos.

mint velvet, jigsaw, etc

Ime you need to consider texture alongside the colour. One navy thing might but be not suitable but another might go perfectly, depending on what it is. The same with the style. This dress looks very light and informal so the jacket should reflect this.
I think personally that this dress is too summery and might be too light for the barn but of course it depends very much on the heating situation and your personal tolerance. I would be freezing in this, the amount of wine needed to keep me warm would make me ill.

DressAdviceNeeded · 20/10/2024 15:15

Good point about textures.

I will be wearing black tights and a black slip so I shouldn't be too cold hopefully. There will have to be a lot of dancing (and using my child as a hot water bottle earlier in the day).

I wore a floaty dress like that to a Scottish barn wedding in October 2 years ago. I wore it with a wrap and was plenty warm. I was boiling once the ceilidh started!

Faux fur jacket. Have a look at New Look.

For the outdoors photos I think you'd be better just wearing the smartest outdoor coat you own, leave it open or draped over your shoulders so the dress shows.

Once you're indoors, you should be warm enough without anything. I don't think any of these suggestions will look right and it's £40 down the drain. Or if you are worried you'll be cold I'd try charity shops for a wrap/ shawl before buying anything new. Whatever you decide on, you won't be wearing it all day.

Bobbyelvis4ever · 21/10/2024 12:59

I'd get a green shawl in the right shade if possible. You'll be able to easily wrap it on and off, and if you wanted to fasten it to start, a brooch at one shoulder.

It's a beautiful dress
