Presents for siblings (boys - 6 and 8)

I need more present ideas for my boys and it is challenging this year as they have (almost) everything + I'm not a fan of tat.

They have two older siblings so our house is filled to the brim with lego, playmobil, cars, magnetic tiles, bikes, go karts etc. They share a nintendo switch, but I 'm hesitant in giving them stuff that will cause them to sit in front of a screen even more. They both love pokemon, so I've already bought them this years calendar, and they may get some more packs. I bought them the pokemon 'lego' last year, but it is still in boxes. It is so weird as their older siblings always loved lego and would have started building immediately. I suspect that because the 8-year old is not so interested in building, the 6yo is copying him.

They both play football but have already got a pile of shirts/equipment. I know I sound stupid, but I'm really at a loss here. So if you had anything that was a success with your 6-8 year olds, please let me know.

Outdoor. Scooters, bikes, kart, skate boards etc or Ninja obstacle course, Den, Treehouse. I assume you already have a rebounder net?

Pokémon squishmallow, onesies, blanket.
Pokémon trading game.

Air hockey table and a stunt kite?

DoloresOnTheDottedLine · 16/10/2024 14:37

Do they have Heelys (trainers with wheels in if you’re unfamiliar)? I’d say they’re the perfect age for those.

TSnewbie · 16/10/2024 15:44

lovely suggestions. We have got air hockey, scooters, bikes, karts, skate boards. Will look into your other suggestions. Heelys worry me a bit (are they safe enough?) but it got me thinking about skates.

My 8 year old son has asked for a gem dig kit and slime.

New duvet cover sets?
Personalised towels? ie things that they can use and aren't tat but are fun to have

At that age I would start with some of the harder lego sets

Pogo stick? Stilts?

Some cooler bath toys?

Board games?

Hot wheels is quite good as there is no end of add ons and they can play with it together

Mine have enjoyed a table tennis set you put over the dining table so you can play on that

Mine are 10 & 12 now and mainly on the switches. But have had success with the following over the years...
Nerf guns.
Remote controlled stunt cars / trucks.
We got the house a set of laser tag guns a couple of years back- the sensors are all on the guns so no vests or anything else to wear.
My youngest got a gravitrax starter set at 8 (more advanced marble run). Has it all over the floor at present! And has received expansion bits over the last 2 years.
A magic set.
Rubix cubes.
My older one started to get into lego animation a couple of years ago, so got an animation camera and some sets and bits. Also a blank comic book that you fill in - so he could storyboard a little.
Oodie type fleeces (bulked the stockings/sacks out one year)
Always books.

Having the same issue with my 8 year old! He’s not really into toys, and I’m trying to steer away from tech. What about….

Amazon kids echo dot
gaming headphones/stand
metal football club sign for their bedroom
LED strip lights for bedroom
I’m getting mine a box of Japanese snacks (he’s really into Japanese culture)

edgeoffreedom · 16/10/2024 20:35

Camera, v tech one is good, comes with selfie stick and green screen.

Yoto player

Yo-yos

Magic tricks

Circus skills items like diablo, fire/devil sticks, spinning plate, juggling balls

Voucher for local rock climbing/ scooter/skate board lessons

Voucher for bowling or bounce park

Stuff for their bedroom - my boys have photo frames, their initials, items related to their favourite things.

Something to collect - my sons are a bit older but I am sure they had the pop figures at that age (one son has lots of Jurassic park ones), one loves fidget toys.

Books - mine weren't amazing readers but they loved 6000 amazing facts, joke and riddle books, books about nature (think we have blue planet etc), Guinness book of world records and comics, there's also a book with all the pokemon in mine loved!

Days out - pass for theme park, farm pass etc.

Basketball hoop.

Bikes.

Lush bath bombs/shower jellies.

Science type kids - Dino dig etc.

Food items - sweet hamper, favourite snacks, hot chocolate set or bomb etc.

Stuff for things we'd do throughout the year...

Swimming - goggles, nice towel, wet bag.

Beach days - wetsuits, dry robes, beach toys, nets, body board etc.

Suitcases for a holiday.

Bikes and bike helmets.

Board games.

Nice stationary - sketching pencils, sketch pad etc.

Oodies - my son's fave!

Headphones.

Great suggestions, please keep them coming! I'm looking now into skates and remote controlled cars - We used to have a traxx car, which was supergood, but also quite delicate and parts were difficult to source. Also a bit too fast for the 6yo.

To give some ideas back: they like doing board games, especially short ones as labyrinth, blokus, ghost castle. They love table tennis (gave my husband a table last year); football (we must have about 25 balls in the garage); the playmobil animals series; lots of hotwheels cars and the hotwheels track builder (not the garage, that was a waste of money); they each have these primark hooded blankets they like in winter (they're a bit too small for oodies yet); they like their pokemon posters in the bedroom, still prefer reading books with pictures/illustrations (wonderbly personalised book was a success), lego blocks get more attention in this house than lego boxes; you can buy packages with only blocks in specialised stores - in the past I bought a lot of the 6/4 blocks + roof tiles and windows.
I have to say that they play more with toys that require no assembly/set up time. We have a laser game set at home, but as they need to be recalibrated every time, it often takes too long for them.
