I’m just wondering how much you tend to spend on your child (under 10) on Christmas presents? Not including the Christmas stocking or trips out. Just trying to find out what the average is. My friend told me that she spends a few hundred but I don’t think most people spend that much?

Spend about £200-250 on my 9 and 6 year old. I have 3 older children and they honestly have a lot more spent on them because their tastes are quite expensive! They get a really good amount of decent and useful proper presents with this amount. But there isn't much point in asking these questions or comparing because there is such a varying amount of answers. Spend what you can afford and buy what your kids love and will use.

Soxersandbocks · 15/10/2024 21:30

£500 on my 6 year old, more on my teenagers

Philodendron · 15/10/2024 21:32

About 100 - 150 last year.
Going to be 200 - 250 this year.

ToddlerMumma · 15/10/2024 21:44

About £50-60 each. Plus loads of lovely experiences and traditions that they will actually remember

Starlight40 · 15/10/2024 21:44

We spent £250 each on our 3 children. 18,15 and 10.x

HermoniePotter · 15/10/2024 21:48

It was normally around the £500 mark but that crept up by a couple of hundred by the time they were 10. Probably an unpopular amount on MN but everyone’s budget and approach to Christmas gifts is different. Spend what you think is appropriate OP as I don’t think there really is an average amount.

pizzaHeart · 15/10/2024 21:49

I think it very much depends on other factors. And I don’t mean the obvious one - income.
A friend always used to spend a lot on her DC but they only got things at Xmas and for birthday whereas my DD got things all year around. Also often people don’t have a lot of family around so trying to compensate for this whereas your child might get a huge pile from
other relatives .

MassiveSalad22 · 15/10/2024 21:50

Hmm I don’t keep track but probably around £200 per child, plus stocking.

Floralnomad · 15/10/2024 21:52

Depends what they wanted or what I thought they would like so sometimes £200 and other times nearer £1200 , I don’t do a set budget and I don’t add it up .

MoneyAndPercentages · 15/10/2024 21:54

I do around £50 ~ mainly because DS has an insane amount of gifts from family/friends which includes big ticket items I'll suggest, so when it comes down to it, I feel like I'm wasting money when he has so much already!

If not for these gifts, I'd probably spend £200/250.

UpTheMagicFarawayTree · 15/10/2024 21:55

I think maybe £100 give or take a bit and depending what is on the list. We do the stocking and main gift from FC, her stocking is not tiny fillers, more like a little Poly Pocket set, new vests/socks (she likes them I promise!), lol doll, cosy blanket, book, stationery etc. I think that probably ends up about £50/£60. Then her main is the one big gift (or two smaller). Anything else is from grandparents and other family.

One year it was a trampoline, which was closer to £250 as I wanted a particularly safe version.

Serene135 · 15/10/2024 21:57

Thanks so much for your replies, everyone! I suppose it depends on what you are buying - technology items and games can hugely increase the amount of money spent. Thankfully mine don’t request games, iPads, PlayStations etc (but I’m sure they will one day).

Last year about £50.
She got so many presents for her Nov birthday that we kept some back and used them for Xmas.
Hopefully this year grandparents will hold back a bit

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 15/10/2024 22:45

Silly question. Some will be spend more,
some lots more, some in the middle and some less or a lot less.

XiCi · 15/10/2024 22:49

I think at that age I spent about £250-300. It's much more now she's a teen

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 15/10/2024 23:52

I budget £400 each as a max cap. That includes the stockings which in our house are from Santa.

MonteStory · 16/10/2024 07:23

These threads come up every year and people always say ‘this is a pointless question’ when actually, they always end giving quite a lot of information.

Theres always a few who spend £500 per child and a few who spend £50. Both tend to be quite defensive 😂

Several come along who spend £100-200. This gives us the median average which is usually what the op is looking for.

People want to feel comfortable in their decisions - asking others opinions helps with that.

OP - I budget £150 per child. They get a ‘big’ present from us (£100
ish at the moment, my eldest is 8) and a sack from FC of medium/small
presents (LEGO, craft, chocolates, dolls). This is flexible tho, if one kids big present is on offer I have more budget for sacks or other presents.

Its edging more towards £200 each tho, everything has definitely gone up.

They have 2 grandparents and 2 uncles

Ilovechristmass · 16/10/2024 12:14

DD is nearly 3. I’ll probably spend about £350 on gifts including bits for her stocking.

TeamPolin · 17/10/2024 13:17

Across the years it averages out at about £200 a year. But DS has autism and often asks for some odd things, and doesn't enjoy receiving things that are not on his list (so some years have been bigger or smaller than others.) One year all he wanted 2 toy trains, a soft toy and a couple of books so it was comparatively cheap. Last year he asked for a Switch (fortunately got a very good Black Friday deal on that.)

jocktamsonsbairn · 18/10/2024 18:17

I used to spend around £100 when they were small but bought toys in the post Xmas sales! Then it got more expensive as they grew older and wanted iPods, iPads, PlayStations etc so budget grew. Was probably back down to around £200-£250 each the last few years but now they are both over 21 I've said around the £100 mark. DD likes expensive make up so she won't have much apart from her stocking! No big heaps of presents this year! Be a shock to the system!

BrownRogerForever · 19/10/2024 21:05

I find these threads really interesting, like a little snap shot into people's lives.

I have 1 child aged 8. We plan to spend £150 to £200. She does get a few smaller presents from family around the £10-20 mark.

taggy321 · 21/10/2024 17:29

I don't really know but I'd guess probably £300?
