Non-fiction book ideas for 5 year old

FakeGucciSweater · 07/10/2024 11:14

Looking for ideas for the above please! DS is 5 (will be nearly 6 at Christmas) and I had already got him an animal biology book for Christmas, but once it arrived I realised it was too old for him so saving it for a few years' time.

Open to any and all ideas, no particular genre as he enjoys learning about pretty much everything - non-fiction books that he has enjoyed before include an ocean animal atlas and a dinosaur encyclopaedia.

Thanks all!

Molly Oldfield's "Everything under the sun" is great.

Needmorelego · 07/10/2024 11:17

Anything published by Dorling Kindersley would be good.

Barleysugar86 · 07/10/2024 11:19

Usbourne do some great ones- if you look for 'the story of' ones especially, they had trains, planes, cars, football, I thought these were really informative. Or you can get information books on a theme like nature.

Usborne Look Inside Space

Hallelujahchorus · 07/10/2024 11:50

Usborne look inside.

Baboutheocelot · 07/10/2024 11:52

The see inside….. books are great and have so many topics. I’d also recommend the dk kids encyclopaedias, but maybe for when he’s a bit older.

Baboutheocelot · 07/10/2024 11:59

Also Maps: Aleksandra Mizielinska - Daniel Mizielinski is a really beautifully illustrated and interesting book for kids.

Amazing, thanks so much for your suggestions everyone, lots to look at!

Snowflake Bentley is a lovely non-fiction book.

We have a few Usborne books that were great from around that age. The Look Inside books and the encyclopaedia.

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 07/10/2024 13:27

Ds fell in love with Lonely Planet Dinosaur map book at that age. He still likes to read it 4 years later.

The Lonely Planet Museum books are also fabulous.

My 6 year old loves the Curious About books. We have Curious about Crocodiles and the Sharks one.

Thank you to the most recent posters too, really helpful!

  • A Day In The Life of a Poo a Gnu and You.
  • The Worlds Most Ridiculous Animals
  • Big Book of the Blue
  • Atlas of Adventures
  • DK Anthology of Intriguing Animals

These are all books that have more in the series so you can get versions to suit his interests.

I wouldn’t worry about a book being too old. Bet he still loves it.

Honeysuckle16 · 08/10/2024 23:43

Over the last couple of years I’ve given my 6 year old grandson all 6 of the Ultimate Books: Ultimate Vehicles; Construction Site; Aeroplanes and Airports; Cities; Planet Earth; Animals.

Each book is a miracle of flaps, tabs and pages that expand and become a volcano or a city street. We spend hours reading them and always find a new tab we hadn’t noticed before.

He also liked the Lighthouse Keeper series, the wonderful Church Mice series by Graham Oakley and the Dragon series by Katie and Kevin Tsang are still huge favourites.

bumbledeedum · 08/10/2024 23:44

Usborne question and answer books are much loved here.

frozendaisy · 09/10/2024 10:51

Dorling Kingsley are worth a look

AnnotherReader · 09/10/2024 10:58

We have these encyclopedias from Dorling Kindersley. They are great for young kids because they are mostly pictures. Then the facts/information can be read as they get older.
