Harry Potter themed gifts

DD8 has just gotten into Harry Potter - she's listened to the audiobooks of the first 3 and seen the first two films - we've said no to Goblet of Fire etc until she's a little older.
I know she'd love some HP themed presents this Christmas but I don't want to buy plastic/landfill tat (wands etc). I was thinking of a hoodie and perhaps a box set of the books but I am open to ideas. She's taken sorting quiz and is a proud Hufflepuff. Please hit me up with your best present ideas.

You can get pretty much anything!! Stationery, jewellery, temporary tattoos, pyjamas, dressing gown, bobble hat, shoes…

TeenToTwenties · 02/10/2024 10:25

M&S have some harry potter themed pjs right now.
Lego does a Hedwig amongst other HP stuff.

HarrietBond · 02/10/2024 10:26

Literally everything has been Harry Pottered. Everywhere. I speak as someone parenting their second HP in a row. We've had bedding (Dunelm have some decently priced stuff), hoodies, all manner of clothes, oodies, jewellery (I've got mine a Dumbledore's Army pendant this year which was about £10 and feels decent heft), stationery, dressing up outfits, advent calendars... There are HP jigsaws in the Works all the time.

There’s some Harry Potter colouring changing hot chocolate in B&M, which is going in my DD’s stocking along with a chocolate frog and some Bertie Bott’s beans. She’d already got some golden snitch string lights and a Hedwig hot water bottle (from Dunelm)

HarrietBond · 02/10/2024 11:25

Our golden snitch lights died very quickly. I hope you have better luck!

Harry Potter sweets eg chocolate frog, bertie botts beans from the official shop. Harry Potter lego. Hufflepuff wall banner for her bedroom wall. Hufflepuff scarf. Hedwig plushie.

Just remembered that the Harry Potter Cluedo is good. My dd has also enjoyed the Harry Potter scratch art kit.

We hated the Harry Potter Cluedo. Totally overcomplicated compared with the original.

Thanks everyone for lots of great ideas! Lots of food for thought.

The illustrated books by Peter Kay are beautiful.

Spirael · 02/10/2024 13:19

You say no wands, and I agree that the official ones are either overpriced or made of plastic. But there are small sellers dotted around the UK that craft wands from rescued wood that are entirely unique, and aren't too expensive.

They often come in boxes with details about the reputed special core, to add to the magic. Being just wood/cardboard they can be composted, repurposed or recycled easily enough when no longer needed.

Would that be worth considering? I got some for my DDs and DNieces and they absolutely loved them, although they did all then need a stern talking to about not casting unforgivable curses on one another...

Tickets for the studio tour or a weekend in Edinburgh?

I think the studio tour would be a bit of a waste at that age and considering she's only watched the first 2 movies. Most of the sets she wouldn't recognise. They could always go again when she's older I guess but personally the first time I went was the most magical so I would wait.

These look beautiful and that's just the sort of suggestion I was hoping for - thank you!
ps. Assume you mean Jim Kay and not Peter Kay 😅

Yes that's a good point. I was thinking of the awful plastic ones I saw for sale in the shop at Heathrow which really had nothing magic about them, but a beautiful wooden one would be lovely.

She is desperate to go on the tour but I agree it would be wise to wait a couple of years - she may wear me down before then though!

Peter Kay would be a very different book I agree!

I posted on a thread on the Christmas board yesterday that was about HP gifts (so it should still be relatively high up).

Boots, of all places, have brilliant things (not just toiletries), plus look at the Miniverse Make It Potion sets. These are good because it gives them something to do. There’s also a Klutz HP craft set which my daughter loved.

Oh I totally missed that! Thanks for the heads up, having a look through it now.

I bought my nephew 12 the tour for xmas and my sister bought my 8 year old it as a surprise. We went and my lad had a brill time having only watched 2x films.

He was most impressed with his HP themed cake in the cafe. The shop there has everything imaginable if she also got some xmas money she could get something there.

morden123 · 02/10/2024 20:41

Ive bought my grandson (5) for Xmas, Schliech HP figures, they are expensive but you can look around at the different sites. There can be quite a difference in price but I think they will last and he likes small play model type things.
