Gift ideas for 80yo mum

It's not Christmas it's for her 80th just before Christmas and I'd love to get her something really special. We always seem to do nights away and my brother is suggesting that but I feel it's too same. We've done lots of experience gifts for her and dad over the years as they have lots of stuff.
She does not need jewellery or perfume. Has enough toiletries to open a shop. I will get her nice wee special chocolates etc.
she likes good quality, well made things and would prefer something beautiful and small than something mass produced and showy. Loves flowers and her garden but has everything for gardening and is struggling with doing it now - won't get a gardener. Hates technology. Have tried the bird watch feeder things but her friend saw a rat in hers so she won't put it up!
I am stumped! Any inspiration gratefully received!

A bird table, a garden ornament, some winter garden planters, electric throw. There's a clock that chimes bird song each hour, on amazon.

CapaciousHag · 28/09/2024 19:10

Honestly - even if she hates technology she may get on well with an iPad. A few of my elderly relatives received theirs around their 80th year and could not be separated from them thereafter. Particularly loved for FaceTiming children / grandchildren; reading the papers, browsing the Toast and John Lewis websites …

flower subscription?

That bird song clock will drive her crazy-I know, I’ve got one!

Is it not a bit fun?!!

Cashmere gloves

Selford · 28/09/2024 19:38

How about a bird box and camera so she can watch any birds which nest?
Or a stained glass suncatcher - Etsy have some lovely ones?

Rocknrollstar · 28/09/2024 19:43

Digital photo frame or nice photo of the family on canvas?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/09/2024 19:43

For her 80th just after Christmas a couple of years ago, DM asked to go to Betty's for afternoon tea. We went to the Harrogate branch. It was delightful.

Obvs only practical if you live in or near North Yorkshire.

Freddiefan · 28/09/2024 19:47

I'm in my seventies and would vote for the idea of a photo of the family on canvas. I have a large canvas photo on the wall which I love. It is a holiday photo which brings back lovely memories every time I see it.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 28/09/2024 19:59

Maybe a painting of somewhere/ people/ pets who are special to her.

Perhaps Christmas rather than 80th a photo book of the town she lived in during childhood for example.

A gorgeous jewellery box?

caringcarer · 28/09/2024 20:19

OP my sister gave my Mum a memory box for her 80th. She bought a beautiful box with roses on and hand wrote out 80 special memories she had shared with Mum. I'll tell you my Mum absolutely loved it and I really wished I had thought of it. It was clearly her favourite gift.

We snuck into our mum’s old photos and found a lifetime’s worth of photos of her — from when she was a baby to her teens to her midlife to her 50’s to her later years and made a lovely memory book for her.
She loved it.

jocktamsonsbairn · 28/09/2024 21:17

Oh wow! So many ideas! I love the 80 memories and the memory book. I'll definitely look into those.
She has all the gardening ideas, bird bath, bird house etc. Has an iPad but hates trying to use it! We have looked into the bird nesting box cameras but neither parent would want to try and work the tech!!
She wouldn't appreciate the clock 😂 but it might be an idea for my sil!! 😂

Yes, but not through the night, every hour, on the hour!

duc748 · 28/09/2024 21:21

Following this thread with interest: I'm trying to think of something for my BFF, who is around that age.

Like I say, it's a gift!

Bignanna · 28/09/2024 22:31

Not quite that old, but if it were me I’d like:
Afternoon tea
Subscription to favourite magazine
Voucher for meal out in posh restaurant
Tickets to a play or musical
Day excursion with lunch included
Handbag
Expensive moisturiser
Lily O’Brian chocs

Similar to the 80 memories idea, a scratch card with 80 different activities to be scratched off until all are done. A sort of Before I kick the bucket list! Might be something like :
Learn a few phrases in a foreign language
Crochet a flower
Try a food you’ve never tried before
Join a life drawing class
Dye your hair purple
Try a new cocktail
Adopt a Llama (not literally!)
Do the Times crossword
etc etc it’s just a bit of fun and a challenge, depending on the physical/mental state.

Tulipvase · 28/09/2024 22:32

A really luxurious throw/blanket?

PandaG · 28/09/2024 22:35

Theatre/opera/sporting tickets, with afternoon tea or dinner beforeor after? Our parents definitely prefer experiences over stuff.

Justasmallgless · 28/09/2024 22:35

As they get older I think parents appreciate spending time with us and grandchildren more so plans to do something together such as tickets to a show, museum, art gallery, special place to revisit that is relevant to them

doitwithlove · 28/09/2024 22:45

You could do the weekend away and book a play or musical locally to see whilst you are there

Midsummernightsdreaming · 28/09/2024 22:54

This. But be prepared for it to be the topic of every conversation from now on when you speak to her. It's amazing and you can upload photos remotely from your phone from home too. Game changer!
