Advent activities calendar adult children

I know it's early but need to have this sorted by October. I've got it in my head that I want to make an activities advent calendar/to do list that each of our adult children and partners can join in spread around the country. Sounds a bit corny but I know they'll go for it even if I get a few eye rolls :)

I'd love some bright ideas - got some such as dance in the kitchen to a Christmas song, watch a Christmas movie, make a mini Christmas reindeer, thumb print Christmas design, Christmas cookie, hot chocolate kit...

Any bright ideas very gratefully received! Thank you!

Christmas lights and you all do a group video call to see what everyone else can see?

Christmas jumper or christmas sock day

Forgottenmyphone · 23/09/2024 13:10

Go and choose a Christmas tree (if they have a real one)
Buy a new decoration for the tree
Decorate the tree
Have a Gregg's festive bake
Have a mince pie
Play Christmas charades

I wouldn’t do some thing for every day as December is a very busy time but just maybe 2 or 3 a week. It sounds like a fun idea.

Mumwithbaggage · 23/09/2024 14:43

Lovely - thank you! Some nice ideas for my list. @Notdeckingthehalls I think 2 or 3 a week is a great idea!

We had Christmas Movie Saturdays in December where we all watched the same one in our respective homes the first year we were living apart.

What about a scavenger hunt type thing in a group chat, so 24 xmas items - candy cane, santa, red bauble etc, and you tick off one item per day and send a photo? Or first one to 24 wins a small prize?

Mumwithbaggage · 23/09/2024 16:01

Loving it all and feeling festive!

Depends on the people involved, but you can create and print your own crosswords- could be Christmas themed or something like Harry Potter/ LOTR /superheroes.
You could do some kind of quiz, or name that ( Christmas) tune. I think my family would enjoy some kind of silly Elf on the Shelf, with everyone posting a photo a few times a week.
Maybe create a Christmas cocktail, or write a limerick or Haiku?

DelphiniumBlue · 23/09/2024 16:39

Forgot to say, I think the whole adventure activities thing is a great idea for families who are scattered, as mine now is. Thanks OP!

We do dingbats as our advent activity and my husband writes a quiz with things like: In February, which family member, got stuck on a train and had to reschedule their hockey match? Where did we meet in April and what restaurant did we eat at?

IggyAce · 23/09/2024 16:43

Decorate a Christmas cookie competition.
Walk round the local area and see the Christmas lights.
Make a donation to the local food bank or toy appeal.

Laundryblue · 23/09/2024 16:49

Bit radical, but how about going to church on one of the Sundays in Advent.

PaintMeARiver · 23/09/2024 17:14

Maybe throw some questions in for busy days, e.g. What was your best ever Christmas present? What's the best Xmas food? etc

JustKeepSwimmingJust · 23/09/2024 17:34

Cracker jokes are good “fillers” - take a moment to do but keep it being a thing every day.

elQuintoConyo · 23/09/2024 18:34

Transcribe some Christmas films or songs in emojis, they have to decipher them. I'm sure you can find lots pre-made online.

Make a nativity scene - could be a blanket on the dog, a drawing, a fruit arrangement - the whackier the better!

Mumwithbaggage · 23/09/2024 19:57

@Laundryblue I'm an organist and dad was a vicar so they all end up coming to the carols by candlelight at our little village Church. Maybe the crib service on Christmas Eve in the afternoon too.

Loving these ideas! Thank you so much! Giving to the food bank is definitely going on there. So's a Christmas cocktail (mocktail for ds who isn't drinking in the 100 days up to Christmas). I'm getting straight on the cracker jokes and dingbats and am rather worried for the cat, who I can now see having to play all the roles in the nativity😹. I'll post what I come up with!

What is dingbats? Is it a game?

I am really enjoying this thread and am completely inspired to help DH out this year in his attempt to get everyone into the Christmas spirit throughout December.. I am usually Grinch until December 22nd.

PadstowGirl · 25/09/2024 10:01

Go outside at night and look for the Christmas star.
Winter forest walk. With it without a soupy picnic.
Feed the birds (can stuff seed and lard into pinecones to make it festive).
Hot chocolate night.
Decorate the windows with chalk paint pictures.
