Present ideas for son's GF

GF is 23 and not a girly girl, is sporty, has tats and wears skater type clothes. She's just about to move into her first flat and I'd like to get a housewarming gift as well. I need to get these gifts right!

Nice big fluffy throw for bed and or sofa. Nice to snuggle into when the colder nights arrive. Went down very well with ds's gf.

ramonaquimby · 09/09/2024 17:38

keep it simple. Nice houseplant and a bottle of something she likes to drink. I'd hate to get candles/nice mugs/cleaning stuff/kitchen stuff as I'm so fussy!

Whatwouldnanado · 09/09/2024 17:41

No to cleaning stuff, towels and kitchen kit and crockery. She will want to pick those herself surely. How about a nice neutral photo frame with a gift voucher for M&S ?

mitogoshi · 09/09/2024 17:47

Please don't buy expensive candies, fancy hand soap etc, she's young and likely needs practical not overpriced stuff.

A basket of cleaning supplies is a great idea, I would also suggest a frying pan (they get wrecked fairly quickly and it's useful to have 2 anyway so not an issue if she already has one) if she is only just starting to cook, a box of herbs, spices and staples

I see everyone’s points about the housewife idea - it was more than I knew all of this was expensive and was so happy I had all these lovely premium cleaning products brought for me so I didn’t have to!

An epic indoor plant. Monsteras are very popular on Pinterest

StormingNorman · 09/09/2024 17:58

My best moving in gift would be a Dominos delivery about 6pm on moving day 🤣

I personally wouldn’t go with mugs as you end up with so many of them. Although if there is a particular dinner service she likes you could get a couple of pieces.

Does your son have any ideas?

OriginalUsername2 · 09/09/2024 17:59

Plants that drape from shelves are very trendy too.

ThisHangryPinkBalonz · 09/09/2024 18:05

Ask your son for ideas?

Seriously, I wouldn't be chuffed with a house plant, cleaning stuff or anything that seems like I'm going to be keeping house.

Ilovelurchers · 09/09/2024 19:48

Does she cook? If so, maybe some decent knives, or a nice olive wood chopping board or rolling pin - something that is a timeless classic. Nobody has ever objected to a le creuset casserole dish either (if in doubt I would go for that classic orange colour they have) - or if your budget doesn't run to that, the versions you can get in Sainsbury's are actually just as good and just as attractive in my opinion.

Or a nice stonewear mixing bowl - again, a classic!

Or bakeware? Does she make cakes at all? One of the best gifts I got recently was good quality bundt tin - I had never made a bundt before so it has been fun to learn about them, and they are actually really easy....

Nice photo frames are another possibility?

Of she drinks alcohol, wine glasses?

Or some good quality towels? Maybe it sounds boring, but I think everybody loves a really nice big fluffy towel that will wash well. Your son can hopefully give you a pointer as to what colour she would like.....

Can I just say it's lovely that you are going to this amount of effort to make her feel valued? Really sweet. In her position, I would appreciate it.

Weird fish do lovely hat and scarf sets with a skater type look to them

OhMyGiddyAunt · 09/09/2024 19:55

Do you know what she drinks? Get her a bottle of something and some nice glasses to go with it. Maybe even some other drink accessories ...cocktail shaker, fancy ice cube tray etc

TKMaxx and Homesense often have lively and unusual glasses

rainbowbee · 09/09/2024 20:01

Get her a big Thermos flask. She can fill it with hot water to prepare for the evenings that power might go and they are useful to have on road trips etc. A good one will do a lifetime

You could ask her whether she has a wish list.

Yep, seconding this!
If she doesn't then think about scented candles, a nice gift set of bath bombs, maybe skincare (lotions, masks, etc). Taking her shopping would be very overstepping, don't do it. A gift basket of useful goods would be a good idea.

If you have good relationship with her and won't be able to see her on her birthday, you can make a smartshow 3d birthday video and email it to her on the actual day. That's what my mom does for my bf and my SIL.

How much are you wanting to spend?

We got ds' girlfriend a cast iron griddle from John Lewis (£40) after she mentioned how much she liked our Le Creuset one although Le Creuset was a bit too expensive

It matches stuff they have in their kitchen. Smile

You guys are great - there's some great gift ideas here and also some great advice on how to navigate the sort of 'in law' relationship which is all new to me and I want to get right. I really appreciate all of your replies.

You sound really lovely

I would ask your son for ideas - anything she's mentioned or would like ?

Budget ? - if she's into hot chocolate a Velvetiser and a large bag of hot chocolate flakes from Pendragon

Lovely warm through

IKEA vouchers or similar shop she uses

Magazine subscription so she gets a monthly nice thing arriving apart from all the bills
