DS has started year 7 and needs a watch, but is unsure what type to get. What type do your Y7 DSs wear?

Thanks

I think watches are pretty rare for teenage boys. They check the time on their phones instead.

Does he "need" a watch? Probably no help here, but my son and his friends don't wear watches at all. He's sixteen now and has never had one. My daughter is 20 and is the same. They use their phones for finding out the time.

At school they were directed by the bells and clocks in every classroom, so never needed one whilst there.

Lots of schools don't allow smart watches (ours didn't, they also have an invisible phone policy i.e. you can bring a phone to school but it must be switched off and kept in lockers during the day).

We went with ds to watch shop get him a watch in the beginning of year 7. He got a basic analog one. He wears it every school day. He is in year 10 now hasn't taken his phone to school a single time, so he needs a watch.

Dd doesn't wear a watch because she has her phone. She is in year 8 and can't fluently read the clock.

Garmin Vivofit Jr. watch.

Check if he wants one - not sure what age yr 7 is (I'm in Scotland), but my 16yo son uses his phone for everything, and I don't think he'd wear a watch. I use my Garmin as my everyday watch, if a fitness tracker might be of more interest to him

Mine wears a Fitbit Versa as he likes to track his steps and sleep.

Acunningruse · 06/09/2024 12:10

School policy is that they have to have their phones switched off in bags all day, so he can't use hos phone during the day. He made a jokey comment this week about needing a watch as he had underestimated how much lunch time he had left. But he hasn't said what type he would like. Perhaps Ill take him shopping. I just wondered what was "in".

My kids wear a cheap digital watch (from argos) for checking the time without a phone. I think they are unusual though.

bergamotorange · 06/09/2024 12:22

Swatch do a nice range, or Casio.

I think a watch is really useful as most schools don't allow phones.

Also it doesn't hurt to limit the phone reliance at other times, such as in the cinema, theatre, at dinner or just when out and about.

DS (yr 6) wears an adult Garmin. He loves running and cycling though.

DutchCowgirl · 06/09/2024 12:31

My 10 year old has a xiaomi MiBand. And my 14 year old his fathers old apple smartwatch. It is nice that they can see how much steps they make in a day, we now go for a walk in the evening sometimes to get extra steps.

bathofbeans · 06/09/2024 13:00

I just bought my 14 yr old a watch so he knew how long he could play football at lunchbreak, and also so he doesn't have to keep getting his phone out to check time on way to or from somewhere (phone snatching is on the rise).

It's not a birthday or Christmas present so he chose a silver seconda with a proper clockface and date - he didn't want digital which surprised me

My DS wears a Garmin Forerunner. I think anything from Garmin would be good.

longdistanceclaraclara · 06/09/2024 13:14

Check the school policy. Ours doesn't allow any form of smart watch including fit bits / trackers.

I've got girls but they wear old school casios,

BeachBabbler · 06/09/2024 13:18

My Y7 DS wears a swatch. He doesn't care much about what's 'in' though so don't know if they are cool or not 😅

CoffeeChocolateWine · 06/09/2024 16:52

My 15yo DS has actually asked for a watch this year. Not a Fitbit or smartwatch, just a classic wrist watch. He was pointing to a couple that he liked at the airport when we came back from holiday. He liked the look of some Casio and Sekonda watches. I need to have a proper look into it.

Yellowcarrot · 06/09/2024 17:05

Mine both have Apple Watches. They’re allowed phones on but they have to be on silent at school so this way they can see their messages easier without having to look at their phones! They also the calendar and calculator functions.

Acunningruse · 16/09/2024 08:01

@bathofbeans I let DS choose one from Argos on my phone and thats the exact one he chose!! Hes over the moon with it and have caught him parading around in front of the mirror with his shirt sleeves up like a mini James Bond Grin
