Do your older children still get main presents?

That’s it really? How much do you get yours, do you still buy main gift?
My eldest (22)has morphed into the not getting main gift category and now gets something new clothing wise (last year it was shoes) , sweets and a bottle of his favourite rum. Plus a stocking of Tat quality reasonably priced useful items.

My young adult dc seems to have done similar so we've gone with a pattern of favourite chocolate, favourite smellys, a couple of small surprises, a bit of clothing if I note needs something eg tshirts, and then I give money so that dc gets same as other dc.

I guess it depends what you consider a main gift. My parents got me the oodie I wanted last year for mine 😁

whosaidtha · 05/09/2024 12:02

Surely the shoes were his main present? I don't understand.

RuthW · 05/09/2024 12:12

My dd has never had a main present, just presents.

AnneButNotHathaway · 05/09/2024 12:17

Isn't a new clothing item a main gift then? I don't think we ever did "main" gifts in our family, everyone just gets present(s) and cards or a smartshow 3d video on email

OMGitsnotgood · 05/09/2024 12:31

We ask if there is anything they need / want up to a certain amount for their main present and we buy it. If there isn't anything specific we give them cash. All adults get stockings, and a few other bits to open. Tends to be more of that if they are with us on Christmas Day.

TheFormidableMrsC · 05/09/2024 13:19

I don't really do a main for my adult daughter. She's more quality over quantity these days. She asked for two specific pieces of jewellery for her birthday this year and I've bought a few little surprise extras. My young son still gets a main present.

Anonym00se · 05/09/2024 13:24

It depends. They have a ‘main present’ budget of £100, plus a stocking with usual chocs, smellies, bottle of something and bits and bobs. Sometimes they’ll choose 2 £50 items, or a few cheaper items instead. Occasionally they’ll want something for more than £100 so they don’t get a stocking.

Redshoeblueshoe · 05/09/2024 13:28

I don't understand this. You are all getting them presents, they are just too old for toys although obviously some aren't

BatFacedGirlll · 05/09/2024 13:30

I spend as much as I ever have on my 17 and 25 year old - and I still do the large pile of presents

AuntieMarys · 05/09/2024 13:35

Mine just get money in their account. We don't get together at Xmas

FirstTimeHomeowner · 05/09/2024 13:52

@BatFacedGirlll I hope I'm the same when DS is older 😁

Lallyhead87 · 05/09/2024 17:29

I found as mine got older they had the main gift stuff already like tv, game console, bike etc. Now it's trainers, clothes maybe gig tickets. Still main gifts but maybe not 'wow' gifts if that's what you mean.

We do this too 😂

caringcarer · 05/09/2024 17:39

£150 for main gift I ask them to send me a link. £70 stockings. Mine are 40, 36 and 29. Stockings for 2 DGC too.

Floralnomad · 05/09/2024 17:39

Mine have never had a ‘main present’ , they just get presents , but we’ve never had a fixed budget either so that is likely relevant .

caringcarer · 05/09/2024 17:44

DD likes perfume, posh chocolates in her stocking, a few bits Xmas socks, face masks, a book, hair oil, gloves etc. DS's have Marvel characters socks, pants, T shirt car air freshener, tube of jelly tots, a book, Toblerone, anything else I might see that I think they'd like.

Justkeeprollingalong · 05/09/2024 21:59

@BatFacedGirlll me too and they're 36 and 40!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/09/2024 10:05

Mine are 25 and 22
DS (eldest) doesn;t like things , unless it's something he has specifically asked for . One year he got a big TV. another year an electric guitar .
He has money and his Dec 1st Box

DD likes presents , she had Levi jeans last year and other presents .

This year I bought diamond/gold earrings as her 'main' present .
We're going out today for coat and shoes but that;s not really present-ey as she'll wear these for work.
She also has a Dec 1st Box

We're going on a Christmas Market Cruise

And she'd like James Norton -gift wrapping optional - but that might be one for Father Christmas to arrange Xmas Grin

@caringcarer please adopt me immediately. You are amazing! I hope your DC and DGC appreciate you. They are all very lucky.

finaGotpaid · 07/09/2024 00:53

My adult children still have main presents but I give them £150 as the threshold! They choose their presents. I buy gifts for their partners approximately £50 . Grandchild I spend what I like 😊

Cobblersorchard · 07/09/2024 00:58

I’m 46 and still get a main present and other bits from my parents. Plus usually £500. Best parents ever 🥰

They also spoil DD and help pay for Christmas food (we host but they pay for a lot of it).

Me too and they are 38, 36,31 and 27. I did get told off by my eldest last year when I promised to pick one off a list and decided to buy the entire list! I also buy them Christmas Eve pjs every year!

Soccermumamir · 07/09/2024 08:37

My eldest has just turned 18. He has a job and about to start uni, so think I'll struggle this year with Xmas presents for him, because he has his own money to buy what he likes. I'll be following with interest.

I'm lucky to have them too. My adult younger DS paid for me to go to Bruges for my 60th birthday. He often buys me a bunch of flowers and drops by for no reason. He takes me to lunch sometimes too. My elder DS got me a bottle of Prosecco for my wedding anniversary. We all spoil each other.
