The perennial 'what to buy DH' question

OMGitsnotgood · 01/09/2024 18:49

I know it's only just September but we have a crazy couple of months ahead and I'd feel happier if I had the ideas at least.

We don't spend a lot of money, preferring to buy something for the house (eg a new telly) or an extra trip away. But we do like to give each other a few thoughtful 'bits'.

Usually, it's a book; a bottle of wine/whsiky; a clothing item to replace something be's already got but looking shabby.
Every year I hope I'll find something just that little bit different. It really doesn't matter whether it costs £5 or £100.

Anticipating the usual suggestions:
He wouldn't appreciate an experience gift.
There's no magazine he'd be interested in enough for a subscription.
Gig tickets/theatre tickets we'd buy anyway as and when.
He isn't into renewing tech for the sake of it so is ok for all that stuff at the moment.
Doesn't eat chocolate. Likes the tea and coffee he likes, so not really gift worthy.
He's not a gardener.
He does cook but we have a load of spices, oils, vinegar etc and more cook books than we'll ever be able to use.
His hobby requires specific equipment so sorts that himself.

All suggestions welcome and if they won't work for me, they might her be useful for other people.

Posh slippers, I've just replaced DHs worn out Ugg slippers as a gift and he's delighted.

Ophy83 · 01/09/2024 19:43

If he's a foodie, maybe some equipment e.g. coffee grinder, velvetiser, fancy Japanese knife, moka pot

Dh and I do a stocking for each other which generally includes something to read, something to eat (possibly a few things to eat e.g. turkish delight/honeycomb, fancy crackers for cheese or pork scratchings etc), something to drink, an aftershave/perfume, new underwear/socks (one year I didn't get this and he was rather disappointed!), something to do like a card game or puzzle book, fancy shower gel and maybe some tickets or something from love honey if the stocking is to be opened when the kids aren't around!

JerryHasSprungAgain · 01/09/2024 20:16

An electric shaver with an extra attachment for ear and nose hair. Sorry if he does not have such hair....

YuliaJollyberry · 02/09/2024 01:16

Mine also gets books, a bottle and something to wear which this year is a pricey aftershave he’d never buy for himself.

In the past I’ve added a fancy bookmark, engraved/crystal whiskey glasses (now broken but he enjoyed while they lasted) and last year an engraved pen knife that went down very well as he’d lost one again.

Spose I am lucky he’s so clumsy really as something always needs replacing.

OMGitsnotgood · 02/09/2024 07:14

@YuliaJollyberry this is the time of year when I am willing DH to break or ruin one of his favourite things 😂

For others looking for smaller gift ideas,
here’s another thread I started re stocking fillerss*

I've picked up a couple of ideas for DH from tbere but wanted to focus on him and possibly larger than stocking filler gifts on here.

Thanks for all the suggestions, please keep them coming!

Any tools need replacing? Bought my DH a new drill and he was very very happy......me I am getting a leaf blower!

FactuallyActually · 02/09/2024 07:50

A Swiss card lite or an Opinel knife.

greenwoodentablelegs · 02/09/2024 07:52

Leather man surge - DH loves his

FactuallyActually · 02/09/2024 07:53

A Brora cashmere neck warmer.

NoCoco · 02/09/2024 10:21

New books, does he read?

Is he into fitness? I bought my dh an ice bath last year and he loved it and uses it loads but appreciate that's not for everyone.

Some things that've gone down well with DP in recent years:

> Comfortable high-top walking trainers for the winter. These ones.
> Waterproof socks for when its not cold but rainy. These ones.
> A slightly colourful version of DP's usual trainers.
> A stocking of random stuff from our local Chinese supermarket.
> Dumbbell rack. This one.
> Kettle bells and powerbags in a variety of weights.
> A very good quality, sturdy, secure backpack. This one.
> A block of PT sessions.

Some of these are really quite specific to my DP but just sharing the presents that have been the most well received.

Last year I bought my adult DS (I don't have a DH) a Lego model of a car that he'd seen in real life (he went on a trip to the 24hr Le Mans race). Kept him busy for hours! So could you get a Lego version of something he likes or admires or generally wants? You do, of course, need somewhere to keep the finished model...

Bjorkdidit · 02/09/2024 14:59

I'm seriously thinking of getting DP a copy of 'the Ashley Book of Knots' which appears to be 'the bible' for knots, so will be of interest to sailors, climbers, riggers serial killers etc.

Also nice nuts. There's a tub of mixed nuts flavoured with paprika type spices you can get in M&S that's good, a bit expensive for day to day, but nice as a treat.

MtClair · 02/09/2024 15:36

I got DH a good bread knife last year which he was quite happy with (MN idea!)

Another thing he really enjoyed is a sock subscription (he receives one pair each month). Been going on for nearly 3 years now and I’m not allowed to stop it 😂

@NoCoco an Ice bath is inspired!

If he likes cooking, how about a meater? Bought one for DH a few years ago after seeing it suggested here and it went down well. He uses it for steaks and joints of meat and it hasn’t let us down yet.
here

GettingStuffed · 04/09/2024 08:13

I've bought DH in previous years
Top of the range mustard In a fancy jar
Pineapple chilli jam

Do you have a food festival where you live? They often have unusual food stuff

MissyB1 · 04/09/2024 08:17

My dh is a foodie, I'm getting him a pasta machine, he's always been on about making his own.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 10/09/2024 09:18

I'm considering getting my DH a steak stone. He loves cooking and I think he'd enjoy the novelty of cooking on one of these so will hopefully be a winner.

He's also loved the Spicery Legend kits that I've bought him in the past and he has since bought them for multiple family members too.

Sunsetsandcocktails · 10/09/2024 09:54

OP I think you might be married to my DH 😂

Some past presents that have gone down well:
-big cosy M&S dressing gown. He’d never have bought one for himself but in winter when it’s cold he loves it
-coffee from his favourite roastery. He buys his own but always appreciates nice coffee. I got a wire basket and put some tissue paper in and put coffee, some crackers he loved as a kid and some cheese in it
-nice skincare such as Kiehl’s moisturiser
-warm slippers
-cycling accessories (toe warmers, water bottles)
-massage gun

for this year I’m thinking:
-leather wash bag (his current one is on its last legs and leather will be a nice upgrade)
-Japanese Niwaki hori knife for the garden. He’s not a gardener but these are so good they make it more fun (got my mum one and she loves it)

Thats all I’ve done up with so far!

Also my DH got me a huge bath towel last year which I wasn’t expecting and i loved it! It’s my own special towel and is so soft and warm, that could work for anyone.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 10/09/2024 12:22

https://www.elvisandkresse.com

I bought DH a soap bag from Elvis and Kresse. He was thrilled with it and it is made from recycled materials (fire hoses).

Legoless · 10/09/2024 12:26

What sock subscription is it? Dh would like that if patterns or colours but not if novelty.

QueenOfWeeds · 10/09/2024 12:33

A year or two ago I saw an electric screwdriver recommended on here. I tentatively suggested it to DH because I didn’t know if he had one, and he said he didn’t need one because his drill had a screwdriver attachment.

Fast forward to recently, when we were moving house and DH got all huffy about how much the removals companies were charging to dismantle furniture. Guess what he bought himself?? Even worse, all the removals guys were really impressed and asking him all about it. Obviously I got no credit at all. So my suggestion is an electric screwdriver, regardless of if he thinks he wants one 😂.

SeaToSki · 10/09/2024 12:39

My DH loved his mouse mat with a nice picture of the DC on it.
