Help me send gifts to Australia

A family member has recently moved to Perth, WA and I have been considering Christmas gifts. Is it better to send and pay delivery (I am not intentionally being dense but I have no idea what the costs / complexity surrounding this would be) or should I look at buying from an Australian company (e.g. a food hamper) to be delivered?

😀

Honestly, just order a delivery from an Aussie shop.

Anxiouswaffle · 27/08/2024 05:17

Order from Aussie shop
My mum tries to send things to me (in Sydney) and totally underestimates time and cost

MumChp · 27/08/2024 06:04

Order from an Australian shop. So much easier with taxes.

You could buy something in the uk and post it , usually takes 6/7 days but postage can be very expensive . Marks and Spencer deliver to Australia. Maybe AustraliaAmazon . You will find it’s generally expensive and some restrictions on what you can send to Oz too.

Wingingitmum11 · 27/08/2024 06:17

Yeah my friends always buy from Oz shops and I buy from uk shops the other way round - way easier. Usually pay on PayPal 😊

I find it quite difficult finding good shops to order from in Australia. The last toy shop I ordered from didn’t deliver the gift at all. I’ve also had huge delays by ordering from Australian shops. It is cheaper to do it that way though. It is very expensive to post from the UK, although family do appreciate things from the UK they can’t get in Australia.
I’m going to look at M&S again based on previous poster advice but I thought they had stopped doing that.
If you find a good way to do it please update post.

I usually buy from Australian stores but still send a Christmas chocolate selection over. I do send that in November though as it can take an age to get there.

Rowgtfc72 · 27/08/2024 06:25

We order from aussie shops and aussie amazon.
We always post chocolate as ours taste better apparently. Cheaper to send 2 small packages rather than one big one.

Reported.

I came a cropper trying to send a Christmas hamper from the UK to Sydney when DD was there on a working holiday visa. I hadn't considered the postage costs, or customs issues. In the end I ordered everything I could from Australian companies or international companies that shipped there. Trying to buy and send goods myself was a total hassle and ridiculously expensive.

Purplebunnie · 27/08/2024 17:31

I got caught out sending a bracelet from the UK, it was refused at the Post Office and then since then l've ordered online from Australian shops.

chocolateoreo · 27/08/2024 22:27

Thank you all 😊 It has been very helpful reading your recommendations and I have found some local shops that look lovely. I think this does seem the best option given postage costs and potential custom issues. Interesting to find out that Marks and Spencer and John Lewis deliver to Australia though!

I buy from Australian companies and never had any problems with the payment side of things. The sites do tend to ask for an Australian mobile number though so I had to input the number of the person I was buying for so they might get a tip-off about delivery or something. Also, it's not always apparent to the person who gets the gift who it was who sent it so you might need to message separately to let them know it's from you.

I have generally found that there's not as much choice as in our UK shops (which might just be because of my search terms) but I couldn't bear the thought of buying something in the UK that had probably been made in China and then sending it all the way back again (and then some!).
