The Autumnal Christmas Chronicles Preamble thread

Hi, and welcome to the Nigel Slater appreciation society Christmas Chronicles Premable thread.

The thread will start proper in late October where we begin our annual journey of reading the Christmas Chronicles in real time. It is a cosy, heartwarming event that one can dip in and out of as life allows. Think flickering candles, woodsmoke, delicious recipes, the odd home made tipple, and bucket loads of touching Nigel-esque anecdotes. It is a veritable Hyyge of a thread.

This thread is to see us through until that time. You will find me, like a squirell, checking on my store of candles at the back of the cupboard.

It's also worth noting that Nigel's new book; A Thousand Feasts is out on 26th September. (with a deliciously Autumnal cover)

Hello again! Thank you for the thread. 😊😊

Oh that book looks gorgeously autumnal. Don't think I can stretch to it, unfortunately, since I just made rather an excessive winter/Christmas purchase from Brandalley. I just can't resist a bargain!!

NotALightPacker · 26/08/2024 10:35

I joined this readalong for the first time last year, but I had just started a new job, and I was super busy. I enjoyed it, but this year, I am looking forward to engaging in more 'cooking a long'.

Thanks for starting the thread!

IClaudine · 26/08/2024 10:42

👋 Thanks for the Copenhagen info on the other thread, RZW and Yuletidesolace.

HappyDane · 26/08/2024 10:44

Hmmm so the book is only £16 on Amazon pre-order. It'd be rude not to, don't you think?

gardenmusic · 26/08/2024 11:15

May I just check - Nigel Slater's Christmas Chronicles - it is just the one book? We will be doing the same again? Mine is a couple of years old.

HappyDane · 26/08/2024 11:24

Yes it's a repeated read-along of the book @gardenmusic. It's been an annual tradition here on MN for a few years now - at least 3 or 4, maybe even more? The book, lovely as it is, is really just a starting point for a cosy autumn, Christmas and winter appreciation thread with lots of hygge and somewhere for us to read, discuss, reminisce and do cosy things during a time of year where so many people feel quite rushed and stressed.

gardenmusic · 26/08/2024 11:28

Thank you, HappyDane. I like lots of hygge. I also like lots of autumn, winter and Christmas. Right up my street!

UnimaginableWindBird · 26/08/2024 11:32

Oh, lovely! My job has an extremely Christmassy element which kicks off in early September, and it does tend to trickle over into my home life, both in terms of very much NOT wanting to become the sort of Christmas perfectionist I sometime encounter but also feeling generally full of festive spirit from quite early on.

EternallyDelighted · 26/08/2024 11:35

Checking in for Being More Nigel, thank you @RainbowZebraWarrior . I don’t like the evenings drawing in much I must admit, but Nigel makes it all a lot easier.

@HappyDane

absolutely, incredibly rude!! 😉

what did you buy from BrandAlley??

each year I see the threads, but never joined. Can someone explain a little more what's involved and if I was to join in what book do I need to buy first??

SummerSplashing · 26/08/2024 11:43

@HappyDane

SummerSplashing · 26/08/2024 11:43

I'll be needing a swift name change 🤣🤣

SummerSplashing · 26/08/2024 11:49

Ok fallen at the first hurdle!

I must have misunderstood I can't find a book 'Garden Music' by Nigel Havers

CrushingOnRubies · 26/08/2024 11:49

Have less going on this year so will make more of an effort to read on the day!!

SummerSplashing · 26/08/2024 11:50

AFTER more coffee! 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

HappyDane · 26/08/2024 11:53

@HappyDane completely misread you reply to Garden Music (the poster) 🙇🏻‍♀️

I might have to name change now & leave you all in peace 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤣🤣🤣

@SummerSplashing the book is called The Christmas Chronicles, by Nigel Slater. 🙂

I thought maybe it was a set of books & needed to start with that one, but as I said above, I'll leave you all in peace now!

MontyVerdi · 26/08/2024 12:04

Ooh thanks! May just buy his latest book. Love the Christmas Chronicles 🥰

Angharad78 · 26/08/2024 12:04

Can I join?

MontyVerdi · 26/08/2024 12:07

Hmmm. Looks like observations rather than lots of recipes so I might hold off for now. But loved the togetherness of last year's thread.

Definitely colder this week where I am in Northern Scotland.

Margo2023 · 26/08/2024 12:11

Oh wow as a first year MN I had no idea of this annual tradition! I discovered Christmas Chronicles in Nov 2020 on my daily long walks and it really lifted me. Can't wait for this. I'm already reading some Autumnal recipes and enjoyed a toffee apple matcha yesterday in the rain. A few of his books are in my library so that's an idea if you don't want to buy

LlynTegid · 26/08/2024 12:15

Don't forget to ask for the time off you would like at Christmas now (or tomorrow at work), or your chronicles may be short!!

AllThePotatoesAreSinging · 26/08/2024 12:17

Checking in!

RainbowZebraWarrior · 26/08/2024 12:17

Absolutely. Everyone welcome. 😊
