Boxing day food for 10

I'm having 10 for food on Boxing day. What can I cook?
I don't want another roast dinner, but want to serve more than sandwiches.
Preferably things I can cook and freeze so I can just pop in the oven.
Any ideas?

TBH, by Boxing Day, I'm sometimes sick of Christmas type food. I'd do something that can be plonked in the middle of the table and everyone helps themselves!
-Fajiatas/chilli or tacos. The chilli/meat part can be cooked and frozen beforehand and re-headed on the day. Lettuce, tomato, grated cheese, tin of re-fried beans, sour cream, jalepenos, salsa etc and everyone makes their own
-Cottage pie or lasagne. Again, just needs heating on the day and add a salad/garlic bread
-Cheese/charcuterie board
-Something light for dessert. Jelly, berries and ice cream.

A lot of good ideas I've noted down here myself as we sometimes have some in laws over on boxing day, even though I've hosted on Christmas day itself!

I agree that people might not want a big dinner depending on what they've done the day before.. Even if they've not had a big roast dinner they may have been eating all day.

I've done curry with left over turkey before which I know you won't have but I also do macaroni cheese.

I like the buffet style idea with lots of salads etc so not too heavy. You could focus on a starter and pudding and have a lighter main? Like soup and nice bread, jacket potatoes buffet then a cheese board and pudding.

Tacos, nachos and all the sides.

Big slow cooker full of veggie chilli plus tortilla chips, tortillas, grated cheese and salsa, all can be made in advance or bought prepackaged, plus those bake in the oven rolls and leftovers, then I ask guests to bring a salad or transfatty stuff eg samosas.

I always make our Christmas Day pigs in blankets with big sausages from the butchers, but we went to a buffet one Boxing Day where they cooked loads (and I mean loads!) of the little shop bought ones, and they went down a storm. They'd go well with the ham you're planning.
I wonder whether macaroni cheese might be a better fit alongside the ham than lasagne?
For dessert, I'd love a trifle as we don't have that on Christmas Day (I know lots of people do). I also put out a plate of Christmas cake, mince pies and Stollen as we never get round to eating those on Christmas Day, plus an alternative for those who don't like dried fruit - lemon drizzle cake freezes well.
If your guests are likely to stay a while, I'd have cheese and crackers in reserve to bring out later.
I always over cater but then we eat the leftovers the following day, saves cooking when you've had a busy day previously .

Boxing Day in our house is cold meats (turkey, gammon), mash, bubble & squeak and pickles and chutney

Another idea could be raclette. I always have lots of cheese left over after Christmas, pickled onions, chutneys etc that could be used up.

Or fondue. You'd need 2 for 10 people though, but friends might have one in a cupboard to borrow.
I've had the regular cheese fondue before, but also a hot, water broth with wafer thin, raw meats we cooked in it. Similar to a Chinese style hot pot. If you par-freeze the meats, they are very easy to cut very thin. The only other prep would be new potatoes, veg and sauces.

Boxing Day is all about using Christmas Day leftovers to make bubble and squeak served with cold meats, pickles and a cheese board in my opinion!

Leftover turkey, a ham, creamy mash, pickles, chutney, coleslaw, leftover pigs in blankets and stuffing balls, cranberry sauce, bread sauce and crusty bread.

I've done this for years and it's always a winner !

Left over pigs in blankets , is there such a thing lol not in this house , best part of the roast dinner.

hattie43 · 31/08/2024 06:41

As for good I go simple . A massive bowl of chilli , rice , tortillas, and then cheesecake and profiteroles with cream cheese.

I try not to overcook mountains of food Xmas day so we can have something totally different on Boxing Day . Besides we have dogs who also have a full roast Christmas dinner so there are no leftovers anyway .

NDmumoftwo · 31/08/2024 07:43

Pie! With all the leftover Xmas day food. Most stuff goes in, and the best thing is that you make it (Ie shove all the leftovers together) when you're clearing up Xmas lunch, pour gravy over and just shove in fridge. Then put the (frozen prerolled) pastry over in the morning and cook! On the offchance you don't have enough veggies and sides left over to fill it, shove some frozen veg in

Our boxing day meal is the same every year (and I love it more than Christmas day). I make a caulflower cheese, bake a large ham and serve with peas and cramberry sauce. You could do that quite easily, then add those bake at home rolls with butter, a variety of cheeses and fruit and pudding could be Christmas pudding or ice cream with ALLthe sundae trimmings self serve.
