Husband help

whosaidtha · 13/08/2024 13:01

I'm asking for help with my husband as you were all so helpful last year. (I ended up going with a guided mystery to solve while walking round York)
I need something for my impossible to buy for husband. I'll lay out my problems:

He hates stuff.
He doesn't drink
He's vegan (I always fill his sticking with vegan treats so no more food)
He doesn't have any hobbies really

I'm really struggling. I am getting him a photo calendar and some vegan chocolate but totally stuck on a main gift. Would like to spend around £50 but can go a bit higher if I'm positive he'll like it.
Please help!!

If he's got everything he wants, don't want any food and can't think of anything to buy surely it would just be a better option to not bother with buying gifts for the sake of it ?

He needs a hobby or an interest.

Why ? Just so the op can choose a Christmas present ?

Dh has no hobbies as he works a lot, has everything he wants, doesn't need drinks, only drinks tea as a hot drink.

so we don't exchange presents. Simple !

For his wellbeing.

Intothevalley · 13/08/2024 14:52

I'd just buy him a better version of thing(s) he already has...

Got socks? Have better socks!
Got shower gel? Have better shower gel!
Got a favourite book? Have a first edition of that book!

And failing that - donation to charity of his choice.

Does he like arty stuff? I got my husband a book called something like 582 things to draw, and a pack of nice fine liners to go with it. Otherwise, how about a one off class or workshop eg pottery. Otherwise, a nice plant/tree for the garden.

He wants a lemon tree. I'll have to look into that.

Blimey...he doesn't drink alcohol, doesn't drink hot drinks, has no hobbies, doesn't 'have time' to read, doesn't cook...😵‍💫

What DOES he do OP?

Do you do anything 'as a couple' that you could maybe buy a gift around? Do you hike, go cycling, swimming, play dominoes?? There must be 'something' that he's interested in??

He works. Looks after the kids. And listens to podcasts. He also likes to go out for walks but just around the block. Not hikes where I could buy him walking equipment. Although now I think of it some new trainers wouldn't be a bad idea.

Decent headphones maybe? Silk walking socks?

Is there anything he used to be into pre-kids you could lean into?

Can’t go wrong with a fabulous pair of trainers!

Just has a thought…how about buying a star and naming it after him, plus a really good home telescope? This could be a new hobby that you could all get into? There’s something wonderful about looking at the sky at night.

There’s more to life than working and looking after the kids OP…sounds like he needs encouraging to find ‘something’ - we only get one chance at life!

For pleasure? To relax? For fun? For mental wellbeing? Or just for the sheer thrill of trying something new!!

We only have one life…and there’s so much more to it than working…or at least, there should be.

It’s also seen to reduce the risk of dementia on top of all the benefits you listed.

Absolutely 💯

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 13/08/2024 17:07

There's absolutely no point in the op trying to foist a hobby on her husband if he has no interest in it.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 13/08/2024 17:18

@whosaidtha if he likes podcasts what about an audible subscription? There's loads of non fiction if that's more his kind of thing

But that rather depends on the person doesn't it, Dh has no interest in any hobbies and even when I've tried to encourage him into spending time doing things he expresses an interest in, he's not interested. He likes earning money which really appears to be his main hobby.

my point is that a hobby has to be driven by the person themselves, I have several very engrossing hobbies out of which I gain great pleasure but we aren't all the same. Indeed I know very few men who have any hobbies apart from a few chaps at work that play golf. This isn't because of a lack of time or funds, they just don't have hobbies 🤷

And none of that negates the fact that it’s much healthier to have a hobby.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 13/08/2024 18:29

One of those '"buy" an olive tree and they send you the olive oil from it' type things?

I don't have a DH but all the blokes in my family will be getting photo printers (so they can print photos from their phones) this year. We all went on holiday together this summer and EVERYONE mentioned the fact that they love having actual, printed photographs to look at rather than just having them on their phone, and I might get some photos printed for the girls, but I won't presume to know which pictures the boys might like best, so they can print their own.

Another good idea. You all helped me last year and I think you've come through again! Got three options now so might push the boat out and get him two things.

Lego?
Trip with the kids? Like a pass somewhere.
Theatre tickets

Cool, well that would be a good idea. Lemon tree is tree of the month on this website I've used for plants so it's 15% off in August www.gardenersdream.co.uk/lemon-tree-p7361

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 13/08/2024 19:03

What about an escape room that you could do together/with your kids depending on ages?

whosaidtha · 13/08/2024 19:10

Thanks @blitzen and the website says that it's good for mental health for everyone worried about that due to his lack of hobbies.

This was my first thought after reading the thread.

A dog? 🐕🥹

I would say a weekend away somewhere lovely, with walks on doorstep and a kids club. Lake District, highlands, Yorkshire.

GogAndMagog · 13/08/2024 23:33

A DNA ancestry thing so you can look at your heritage?

A personalised Zoe diet membership?

Oodiks · 13/08/2024 23:40

Socks - I always want good socks and they're really expensive these days.
