Christmas Day evening food

We have a late Chrismas lunch, a break then pudding late afternoon. We certainly don’t need another meal but we do tend to stay up late playing games/watching a movie/ just chatting. Usually it’s a cheese board, mainly because we all love cheese and it’s very easy to assemble after lots of boozeOccasionally add pate, sausage rolls and pork pies for the meat eaters, The usual crisps, nuts, chocolate on offer, anyone who wants a sandwich can go and make one, and Christmas cake/mince pies/Stollen for anyone who wants something sweet.
All adults.

Was pondering, as you do when it’s July and 25 degrees, what we could do to make it a bit different this year.

Any thoughts? More than happy to continue as above, just idle musing and thought I’d ask.

Back in a minute. Thank you for a nice, sigh out Christmassy thread

MounjaroUser · 29/07/2024 18:58

Hang on, no turkey sandwiches?!

OMGitsnotgood · 29/07/2024 19:01

@MounjaroUser I don't make sandwiches but anyone who wants one can go and make one themselves!

I always think if you do lunch correctly then you shouldn't be hungry for the rest of the day.

At a push I MIGHT cram down a slice of Christmas cake and a cup of tea.

bravotango · 29/07/2024 19:05

We have cheese on toast! Plus second dessert. Leftovers are for the turkey and ham pie the next day, surely!

gardenmusic · 29/07/2024 19:06

I think what you are doing is just fine - I wouldn't want to be doing much prep in the evening because I'd be stuffed to the gills and sleepy.

TeenToTwenties · 29/07/2024 19:07

Turkey toast, or reheat meal. Nothing got specially, fridge is full enough as it is.

TheBizzies · 29/07/2024 19:07

I tried different things and everyone moaned 😂

merryandbrightdelight · 29/07/2024 19:09

Ohhhh op I like what you currently do! Delicious!

MymateDave · 29/07/2024 19:11

We do the same op. Look forward to the replies also

elliejjtiny · 29/07/2024 19:13

Turkey and cranberry sandwich and pringles. Maybe a mince pie too.

caramac04 · 29/07/2024 19:15

Forerro Rocher and wine for me (after hosting breakfast and lunch for 12). DH makes himself a sandwich. No other guests.

OMGitsnotgood · 29/07/2024 19:16

Yes I always make a pie on Boxing Day with all the leftovers but there's enough for a sandwich if wanted. I am now craving a Turkey sandwich!

We do exactly what you do!
But if you wa t something different how about a FONDUE? Dipping potatoes, chunks of meat and sprouts into a cheese sauce, yum x

MounjaroUser · 29/07/2024 19:17

Oh ffs I'm on Mounjaro and just realised I won't want to eat on Christmas Day. Arrgh!!!

OMGitsnotgood · 29/07/2024 19:17

You obviously aren't feeding the people I am!

Yes I can imagine the 'where is the cheeseboard' shock ! I'll probably end up doing the same thing, not even sure why I started thinking about it but am very grateful for all the responses!!

What you are doing is perfect. I would only add turkey sandwiches and smoked mackerel pate on toast, but only if you wanted to do something different. People usually love exactly what they had last year.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 29/07/2024 19:52

Honestly you can’t beat cheese and biscuits in my opinion! I LOVE cheese, esp. Brie with grapes on a cheese board 🤤

You could add some crusty bread and a nice festive pate with the cheeseboard. Some mini homemade quiches (olive and feta, shallot and bacon)

There is a blog/website called Recipe Tin Eats who has some great recipes for nibbles and all her recipes are super easy and quick with minimal ingredients and can be made ahead. (The aforementioned quiches are from that site and are lush)

Edited as put wrong website name on!

I do similar on Christmas Eve , we have lunch early on that day then cheese , French bread, crisps , a fresh salsa salad, mince pies , Christmas cake in the evening .

Christmas Traditions are not to be meddled with , if it works for you then carry on. Xmas Grin
I might add a tomato chilli soup (soup maker does the hard work )

mitogoshi · 29/07/2024 20:55

Cheese, cheese and more cheese washed down with port

PruneInTheNest · 29/07/2024 20:57

We have our Christmas pudding because we’re all too full after the Christmas dinner and by the evening we can finally manage it. If we’re hungry after that we pick at cheese or chocolates.

leftovers are the next day

Teenagehorrorbag · 29/07/2024 21:03

We always do a lovely 1970s style prawn cocktail early evening. With lots of salad, brown bread, lemon quarters, tomatoes and cucumber, plus a bit of paprika. I buy a jar of sauce but you could make your own. After all the rich food all day it feels really palate cleansing and just what the doctor ordered.

Of course there's always cheese etc around the place - but the prawn cocktail really hits the spot!

BearsloveXmas · 29/07/2024 21:14

Loving this thread 😍 it’s getting me through this mini heatwave!

Tulipvase · 29/07/2024 21:32

We basically do what you do. We don’t eat till about 3 or 4 so certainly don’t need too much. Well I don’t, my husband and teens may disagree! Lots and lots of cheese and cold meats etc.
